Position: Invasive Species Field Technician
Term: 1-2-month contact position
Organization: Coastal Action 
Location: Mahone Bay, near Bridgewater & Lunenburg, Nova Scotia

Wage: $15.00/hour + 4% vacation pay for 35 hours per week.

Status: 1-2-month full-time position beginning as soon as possible and lasting until August 31st.

Coastal Action is seeking to fill a full-time Field Technician role within our Species at Risk & Biodiversity Team. Coastal Action is a charitable organization that addresses environmental concerns throughout the South Shore region of Nova Scotia and was established in December 1993. Reporting to the SAR & Biodiversity Team Lead, the Field Technician will assist with various tasks relating to Coastal Action’s ongoing projects, in particular their Invasive Species Project, and endangered Atlantic Whitefish Project.

Your Opportunity:
• Conduct hands-on field work with a wide variety of projects
• Gain experience working to protect endangered and threatened species
• Working with invasive species
• Conduct data management and data entry.
• Help to deliver public presentations and community outreach activities
• Assist with other Coastal Action Teams such as the Water Quality & Watersheds Team and Climate Change and Education Team, as time allows.

Your Experience(s) and Education:
• Post-secondary education with a concentration in environmental science, biology, fisheries/wildlife management, or other related disciplines
• Backpack electrofishing certificate is considered a very strong asset.
• Flexible and adaptable to a changing work schedule (including weekend and evening work)
• Self-motivated, with the ability to work independently
• Ability to perform and multi-task in challenging work environments and weather conditions
• Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and efficient time management.
• An aptitude for safe work practices.
• Strong oral and written communication skills.
• Additional skills considered assets include experience with; boat electrofishing; species at risk, water quality monitoring, fish handling, pleasure craft license.
• A valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle for work purposes.
• Training in First Aid: current certification in Standard First Aid + CPR Level A (or equivalent).

How we define success for your role?

The Invasive Species Field Technician will spend most of their time conducting field work and scientific angling for our Atlantic Whitefish Project. This will be an exciting and dynamic role in which the successful candidate will gain experience with hands on field work. Field work locations may include the Petite Rivière watershed and the LaHave River watershed. Candidates must be comfortable working in and around water and performing physical tasks in all weather conditions and challenging environments. This position will require flexibility and the ability to work weekends, with the possibility of some evening and overnight work. The successful candidate must also be willing to assist with other Coastal Action projects and outreach opportunities when needed.

Some office work will also take place at Coastal Action’s new office space at the Mahone Bay Centre on the South Shore.
