The Nova Scotia Environmental Network focuses on protecting and conserving the environment by supporting our membership of environmental organizations, which as a collective carry out work in sustainability, habitat conservation, environmental education, policy development, advocacy, stewardship, event planning, and science. Our job offering through Canada Summer Jobs will provide the youth with opportunities to connect with these various organizations across Nova Scotia, learn about their work, and amplify their work in the public sphere. The youth will be performing outreach tasks with the membership communicating their work to the public.

This job provides a unique opportunity for the youth to observe and understand the big picture of how environmental work is carried out over an entire region, from small-scale grassroots projects to large-scale government-funded projects.

The youth will also be encouraged to think critically about how seemingly independent projects and campaigns can complement each other through our networking channels for enhanced collective outcomes. In this way, the youth will have opportunities to make tangible impacts on environmental work in Nova Scotia.

Tasks & Responsibilities

The tasks and responsibilities are centred around communication, outreach, and information management for our organization. Specific tasks and responsibilities will be drawn from the following list in accordance with the youth’s skills and interests:
• Leading creation and distribution of monthly environmental newsletters for our 675 subscribers.
• Writing blog posts for our website and managing external content submissions.
• Leading management of our social media accounts and undertaking a social media audit.
• Managing our website, overseeing updates of content, events, and resources..
• Facilitating the collection of data on environmental news, issues, events, and other topics to populate a new interactive environmental map of Nova Scotia on our website.
• Learning about the diverse range of environmental work that is undertaken by our membership of 31 environmental organizations across Nova Scotia.
• Leading engagement and research around new ways to bring environmental organizations together for collaborative efforts and enhanced collective outcomes and executing these projects as needed.
• Reaching out to African Nova Scotian and Mi’kmaq-led organizations to initiate new opportunities for collaboration and amplification of their work.
• Working with committees to plan webinars and events focused on environmental networking or public education, including monthly virtual coffee houses with NSEN members.
• Conducting outreach with our current environmental organization members across Nova Scotia (by email, phone, or online survey) to collect feedback on NSEN’s service offerings and future direction.
• Attending environmental networking events to represent NSEN and meet representatives of other environmental organizations.
• Participating in monthly board meetings, with the option to plan and chair a meeting to develop leadership skills and reporting regularly to the Board of Directors on work progress.
• Making recommendations to the Board of Directors regarding NSEN’s future direction based on experiences and lessons learned during the work term.
• Supervising/managing volunteers when needed.
• Creating a brand value document and ensuring website and social media platforms reflect messaging
• Create a member environmental organization directory on the website

Skills that the youth will gain include (but are not limited to):
• Client service
• Teamwork
• Communication
• Digital skills
• Leadership

We will require a weekly update summary of completed work submitted by the youth to the supervisor and mentor via email.

We will provide regular feedback on these updates during weekly meetings to ensure the youth feels confident in the direction of their work. These weekly meetings will also provide an opportunity for the youth to provide feedback on their level of satisfaction with the job and their experience of working with our team.

This plan is flexible and we are open to hearing the youth’s ideas/preferences regarding work updates and check-ins. We will discuss this with the youth during orientation training at the beginning of the term.

Great to have:
• Experience and comfort working independently and remotely
• Experience working with a diverse groups of partners
