The Ecology Action Centre is an environmental charity based in Nova Scotia. We take leadership on critical environmental issues from biodiversity protection to climate change to environmental justice. POSITION SUMMARY 

This is an extraordinary opportunity for an accounting and finance professional with five plus years’ experience and expertise in accounting and financial analysis, budget development and forecasting, managing reporting and grants administration, ideally working in a complex non-profit that has multiple programs. The Finance Controller plays a key role in effective decision making by providing accurate, timely budget and financial reporting materials to others. This position reports to the Director of Operations and Development and currently supervises two individuals on Finance Team, the Finance Administrator and Finance Clerk.

ABOUT YOU 

You have keen analytic and problem-solving skills with which you strategically interpret financial information providing critical and reliable insight to those around you. Your background and expertise will ensure that EAC’s finances are well managed, with proper accounting practices and controls in place, complies with CRA requirements for charities and adheres to ASNPO regulations. You are eager to inspire and empower a small team of finance staff to operate EAC’s financial processes effectively. Having strong interpersonal, communication and time management skills and a desire to translate complex financial concepts to individuals at all levels of the organization, will make you effective supporting and advising EAC Leaders and the non-profit Board of Directors.

WHAT YOU WILL BRING 
• Experience developing and managing $3M+budgets and managing foundation and government grants.
• Excellent knowledge of GAAP and ASNPO with CPA or comparable professional accounting designation.
• Thorough knowledge of audit procedures, risk management, and preparation of financial statements, including year-end.
• Demonstrated ability to efficiently manage your time, workload and resources, schedule and prioritize projects in order to meet strict deadlines and produce thorough, high-quality work.
• Leadership and mentoring skills to empower the Finance Team to enhance their skills and better integrate finance, HR, and IT functions.
• Ability to effectively communicate technical information to different audience.
• Technology savvy experience with advanced knowledge of accounting, contact management databases, Microsoft 365 specifically advanced Excel skills, and an understanding of IT systems and database requirements for a similar sized organization and of an organize of this size.
• Experience working with Sage 50, ADP payroll system.
• Demonstrated collaborative skills working with diverse groups.
• Commitment to environmental issues and social justice.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES YOU WILL HOLD 
• Co-ordinate the annual budget process for action teams, fundraising, and operations; review budgets and compare to actual results being able to identify, explain, and correct variances as appropriate.
• Oversee the accurate collection, consolidation and tracking of actual spending against budgets, all incoming/outgoing financial transactions for operations, projects, grants, invoicing and all month-end activities, including authorization of payroll and review of data captured in SAGE.
• Consistently analyze financial data and present financial reports in an accurate and timely manner; clearly communicate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements; monitor progress, variances from budget and keep directors informed of EAC’s financial status.
• Continuously collaborate with Director of Operations and Development to assess the financial efficacy of operations, establish, implement and maintain robust financial systems to ensure sound short-term and long-term business decisions and controls to safeguard the organization's assets.
• Maintain awareness of the state of the broader economy and how that might impact donors and funders.
• Develop and implement the financial policies, systems and procedures and monitor compliance with existing financial policies, procedures and documentation ensuring EAC’s verification processes are adhered to and authorized signatures obtained, revising as necessary.
• Assess the effectiveness of current accounting operations and internal control systems, including software and supporting database, offering recommendations for improvement to procedures, operating systems, budgets, and other financial control functions and implement changes.
• Foster good finance accounting practices amongst staff and provide support and guidance to for proposal budgets, contribution agreements, procurement and reporting to funders.
• Coordinate and prepare internal and external financial statements, including: o quarterly financial updates for the board.
• year-end package containing financial results and organizational statistics for AGM.
• updates for staff on overall financial status of the organization
• year-end activities and complete final accounting entries.
• Liaise with auditors to close year-end; Prepare working documents for auditors and draft financial statements.
• Complete the annual charitable tax return and ensure the timely and accurate preparation of all government-related financial filings ensuring compliance with CRA requirements.
• Manage EAC bank accounts, stocks, cash flow and capital assets in support of EAC’s mission.
• Maintain risk register and support Director of Operations & Development on risk management issues.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT 

This is a full-time position, 37.5 hours per week, starting wage $26.00 - $29.00 based on experience.
