Position: Youth Development Assistant, 9 Week Contract Position
Type: summer job / age 30 & under
Organization: Waterlution
Location: Applicants must live in or near Sackville, Halifax Regional Municipality, Nova Scotia

Timeline: May 31, 2021 to July 29, 2021
Wage: $16 per hr
Hours: 30 hrs per week, flexible schedule (some regular office hours required, and some evenings/weekends required for online workshop delivery/special events).

The Youth Development Assistant reports to the School Programs Coordinator and supports the delivery of the Young Water Speaks Contests and associated Youth Advisory Board volunteer program.

Young Water Speaks is a national storytelling project and contest. Youth get inspired by local waterscapes & history through pre-workshop activities in engaging workbooks & online storytelling workshops led by Waterlution’s trained Youth Advisory Board (YAB) volunteers. Youth develop stories to be entered into the contest and win amazing regional prizes! Canadian youth that participate in storytelling training workshops & the contest will also be invited to engaging sessions with experienced and emerging storytellers.

Role and Responsibilities:

Reporting to the School Program Coordinator working collaboratively with other Youth Development Assistants across Canada, the Youth Development Assistant will:
• Conduct outreach around Young Water Speaks fall workshops & Summer Camps
• Organize and run YWS Workshops, summer camps and special events
• Deliver Young Water Speaks workshops for youth, alongside YAB volunteers and/or solo once trained and confident with delivery
• Conduct outreach to businesses and local organizations to secure contest prizes
• Promote the YWS USB program to rural and remote schools
• Update Young Water Speaks contest & evaluation materials
• Update interactive activities booklet to give volunteers and teachers options for leading hands-on activities in a virtual setting
• Assist with preparing posts for social media
• Assist with running YWS events (virtual or in-person - covid permitting) such as traveling exhibit showcases
• Light administrative tasks to support the Young Water Speaks Project, as needed
• Participate in weekly check-ins with YWS staff team & send weekly update emails

Knowledge, Skills & Experience:
• Organized and able to work from home-based with minimal supervision (includes mentorship and support from Waterlution team)
• A background in the arts and curation is considered an asset (please highlight in your application)
• A strong communicator who will provide weekly updates to the Youth Programs Coordinator on their work progress, successes, challenges and capacity
• Experience coordinating with teams, experts, partners, and/or stakeholders
• Experience using ZOOM meeting technology and google drive
• Experience or training in delivery storytelling workshops, contests or programs is considered an asset (please highlight in your application)
• A self-starter who enjoys getting the job done and is not afraid to ask for more support/guidance when needed

Work Details:
• Work from home environment (during and post COVID restrictions), you will need reliable internet access, a quiet, comfortable desk space to work, and the ability to remain motivated, responsive and focused in a work-from-home setting.
• Must have a personal computer with a webcam and mic built-in
• Must use personal phone and computer for work purposes (phone bills and internet bills are not covered by Waterlution).
• Waterlution operates on 7.5-hour workdays. We prefer workdays to fit between 9 am and 5 pm, yet some flexibility can be offered. Some flexibility will be required of the summer employee when online events need to be delivered in the evenings or on weekends.
• Applicants must be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of employment
• Applicants must be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment
• Applicants must have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.
