In the future, climate change, if not addressed in time, risks destroying the United States along with the whole of modern civilization. Already in the next few decades however, climate change threatens to ravage vulnerable states around the world, create a new wave of mass migration from Central America, and undermine key U.S. allies.
In a brief based on his recent book, Climate Change and the Nation State, Quincy Institute senior fellow Anatol Lieven argues that climate change is a threat to American interests and the American people that dwarfs those presented by adversaries such as China, Russia, or Iran, and that it should be treated as a far greater priority by the U.S. foreign policy and security establishment.
On a panel to discuss his paper, Lieven will be joined by Neta Crawford,  Professor and Chair of the Department of Political Science at Boston University, and John Conger, Director Emeritus of the Center for Climate and Security, Senior Advisor to the Council on Strategic Risks, and Senior US Advisor to the International Military Council on Climate and Security (IMCCS). The Multilateral Dialogue of the Konrad-Adenauer-Foundation in Vienna, together with Atomic Reporters, invites you to an online discussion on The Future of the Non-Proliferation Treaty after 50 years? The NPT entered into force on 5 March 1970; it was extended indefinitely in force on 11 May 1995. The Treaty is the most successful and the most widely adhered to multilateral legally binding instrument governing nuclear non-proliferation, nuclear disarmament and cooperation in the peaceful
uses of nuclear energy - the "three pillars" of the Treaty. The NPT Review Conferences have been held every five years since 1970 - the ones in 1995, 2000 and 2010 resulted in agreements by consensus on various measures across the three pillars, especially on nuclear disarmament. The NPT review process is the only forum where the five nuclear-weapon States - China, France, Russia, UK and US - engage substantively on nuclear disarmament. The 2020 NPT Review Conference was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic and now is scheduled for 4-28 January 2022. Given worsening relations between competing nuclear-armed States, ongoing nuclear weapons modernization, nuclear disarmament at a standstill, and non-proliferation challenges, what lies ahead for the NPT after fifty years: will it survive, will it muddle along or will it be supplemented by additional measures? These and related matters will be the subject of discussion among senior diplomats covering nuclear governance matters.

2021 BLUMENFELD PRIZE ESSAY CONTEST ON REDUCING THE DANGERS OF NUCLEAR
WEAPONS - $500 for undergraduate students, deadline December 20!
How can humanity reduce the dangers and risks of nuclear weapons?
As the world grapples with the Covid pandemic and an increasingly serious global climate
crisis, thousands of nuclear weapons remain in arsenals around the world. Many of these
weapons are ready to be launched within minutes, threatening humanity with nuclear
catastrophe. Progress in reducing nuclear-weapons stockpiles and enacting new arms control
agreements has stalled or reversed in recent years. Many nuclear weapons states are committing
billions of dollars to upgrading their nuclear arsenals and developing new generations of
nuclear weapons. How can we rid ourselves of these dangerous weapons?
The Science for Peace 2021 Blumenfeld Prize Essay Contest invites Canadian undergraduate
students to grapple with this issue. Here is the specific question: Is Canada's adherence to the
UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons the most efficacious strategy for Canadian
peace activists in responding to the nuclear threat?
A prize of $500 will be awarded for the top essay.
Guidelines: The contest is open to full- and part-time undergraduate students in any Canadian
university or college who are en-route to a degree. Limit one entry per person.
Essays must be 2000 - 2500 words and double spaced. Please include a word count at the end of
the essay. All essays must be written in English or French. Pages should be numbered and the
title of the essay should appear on every page. Contestants must use citations when referencing,
paraphrasing, or quoting someone else's work. Citations must be consistent but do not need to
follow a specific form. Essays submitted for university coursework are eligible for submission.
However, essays must be previously unpublished. The writer's name should only appear on the
first page of the essay. Judging will be done blindly by a select panel of judges from Science for
Peace. All essays will be screened by Turnitin.
Essay submissions must be received by December 20, 2021. Electronic submissions should be
submitted as a .doc or .pdf file. Please submit your essay as an attachment to a message sent to
sfp at physics.utoronto.ca<mailto:sfp at physics.utoronto.ca> Please include your phone number, university affiliation, and program
and year in your message.
Students submitting essays for the 2021 Blumenfeld Prize are encouraged to participate in the
2022 Science for Peace Student Forum on Reducing the Dangers of Nuclear Weapons, to be
held online in late January, 2022 (Forum details will released in the fall of 2021.) The
Blumenfeld Prize winner will be announced at the 2022 University Student Forum.
