Hiring: At-Sea Observers
Employer: Atlantic Catch Data
Location: Halifax, Nova Scotia (housing available, see below)

Atlantic Catch Data has roots in the commercial fishery monitoring programs within the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO), stemming from the inception of the dockside monitoring program in the early 1990s. DFO implemented these programs in response to the rapid decline of critical commercial fish stocks, most notably the cod collapse. ACD currently provides dockside monitoring and at-sea coverage for all ports in Nova Scotia and southern New Brunswick, with a large portion of the at-sea coverage occurring on the southern shore of Nova Scotia.

Job Description:
At-Sea Observers are designated to record fishing activity data onboard commercial vessels. The information collected includes catch and effort, adherence to the Fisheries Act and biological data of length measurements, maturity stage determination, and stomach analysis for required species. The data collected is used by the Science and Conservation and Protection branches of the Department of Fisheries and Oceans for the ecosystem fisheries management approach. Due to the importance of the information collected, selected candidates must complete our in-house training course to obtain At-Sea Observer designation from the Department of Fisheries and Oceans.

Mandatory Qualifications:
• Must have reliable transportation
• Must have access to a cell phone
• Understand fundamental mathematics
• No financial interest in a commercial fishing business or possession of a commercial fishing licence.
• Have a grade 12 education or equivalent work-related experience.
• No criminal record (Record check will be conducted)
• Pass both designation tests from the training course

A degree or diploma in biology, marine biology, natural resources management, and ocean science is considered an asset.

Employment Term: Full-time and Temporary Employment options are available

Accommodations: We have a fully furnished company house available for individuals who wish to make back-to-back trips or are relocating for the position.
