• Time Period: 3-year contract (3-month probationary period) - renewable

TransCoastal Adaptations (TCA) is a Centre of Expertise for nature-based adaptation to climate change at Saint Mary’s University. Our mission is to help build climate-resilient coastal communities and ecosystems by protecting, enhancing, and restoring natural processes through innovative research and collaboration and by implementing nature-based adaptation solutions (transcoastaladaptations.com). TransCoastal Adaptations builds on two decades of collaboration and expertise in coastal habitat restoration, climate change vulnerability assessment and adaptation, coastal geomorphology, land use planning, and applied research.

About Our Opportunity

The Communications and Engagement Officer will join a dynamic team at TransCoastal Adaptations at Saint Mary’s University (SMU) in Halifax. They will report directly to the TCA Project Manager Kristie McVicar and work alongside the Education and Outreach Coordinator Kelly Umlah. The Communications and Engagement Officer will manage and create social media content and maintain TransCoastal Adaptations’ website, updating content and educational materials as required. They will manage thedelivery of TransCoastal Adaptations’ quarterly newsletter, as well as coordinating the delivery of TCA’s virtual webinar series and nature-based climate adaptation workshops. The Communications and Engagement Officer will coordinate internal communications for the Centre, including scheduling weekly team meetings and internal presentations. They will also be responsible for communicating with TransCoastal Adaptations’ partner organizations and collaborators with regards to communications campaigns and 
 contracted communications and engagement commitments. We offer a dynamic, flexible work environment with opportunities to get your hands dirty on applied projects in the field.

Key Areas of Responsibility:
• Managing and creating content for website, social media, quarterly newsletters, and other communication materials;
• Implementing communications and social media strategies, both independently and in collaboration with partner groups;
• Communicating and engaging with TransCoastal Adaptations partner groups regionally, nationally and internationally;
• Managing internal communications including coordination of weekly team meetings and activities;
• Planning and organizing the virtual webinar series and coordinating a bi-annual workshop;
• Maintaining internal resources (mailing lists, contacts, photo, branding materials);
• Writing, editing and formatting reports and project deliverables as required; developing other communication materials and graphics, including interpretive signs, posters, and brochures.

Position Requirements/Qualifications:
• Completion of post-graduate education in a related field such as geography, environmental science, environmental management, earth sciences, planning, communications, or related field; or equivalent experience;
• Minimum 2 years of related experience;
• Past experience in event planning;
• Demonstrated experience in relationship building and engagement;
• Must have strong written and oral communication skills;
• Must have strong organizational and time management skills;
• Must be highly motivated, independent and hard-working;
• Should have experience with website management, MailChimp, Microsoft outlook and be skilled at social media engagement;
• Demonstrated ability to communicate and engage diverse stakeholders and rightsholders including NGOs, rural landowners, planners, scientists, First Nations communities and decision makers;
• In-depth understanding of climate change impacts and adaptation in coastal regions;
• Experience working with First Nations Communities is considered an asset;
• Position is based at Saint Mary’s University in Halifax, flexible work opportunities are available but some in-person work required;
• Experience with graphic design and communications software such as Adobe Illustrator is considered an asset;
• Must be a Canadian citizen or legally entitled to work in Canada;
