Peace on the Korean Peninsula has long been a cherished wish of the Korean people for seven decades after the Korean armistice agreement. Since the breakdown of the Hanoi summit in February 2019, peace talks between the U.S. and North Korea remain at a stalemate. In March 2022, South Korea will hold a presidential election. Will the door of peace on the Korean Peninsula be reopened? Join us to hear the insights of two experts on the prospects for peace on the Korean Peninsula in 2022.

Simone Chunimone Chun, Ph.D., researcher in US foreign policy in the Korean Peninsula; former Assistant Professor at Suffolk University; currently a member of Korea Peace Network, associate at Korea Policy Institute and Board of Advisors at CodePink. WEBINAR: Meet the Big 5: How the Military-Industrial Complex Controls Politics
Mon January 24 @ 7:00 pm EST - 8:00 pm EST
Organized by Massachusetts Peace Action
(*The US Military Industrial Complex has a huge influence in Canada!)
We talk a lot about the military-industrial complex, but what exactly is it, who makes it up, and why are they so important? A new coalition groups opposing their local war companies has joined together to form the War Industry Resisters Network, focused on corporate control over US foreign policy. The political influence of several weapons manufacturers has made these companies extravagantly wealthy, all while the United States has wasted trillions of dollars on military adventurism and destroyed large parts of the Middle East and Central Asia, killing at least hundreds of thousands and displacing tens of millions. WEBINAR: Contingency Base Canada: War-Making Infrastructures & Military Grow-Ops
Tue, January 25, 2022 from 3:00 PM - 5:00 PM EST
With Anthony Fenton, Tyler Shipley, Sara Matthews, and Paniz Khosroshahy
Writing for The Breach in June 2021, Martin Lukacs reported on Canada's creation of a global network of contingency bases. In referring to Canada as a "contingency base" nested in historical and contemporary practices of state and military violence, this session provides a chance to unpack Canada as a staging point for settler colonialism and global capitalism. Using and working with the frame of the contingency base, we interrogate Canadian military affairs in relation to infrastructures of war-making, military operations, and the political economy of war.

WEBINAR: "POSING AS CANADIAN: HOW BIG FOREIGN OIL CAPTURES CANADIAN ENERGY AND CLIMATE POLICY"
Thursday, January 27 at 7:30 PM ET
With speaker Gordon Laxer, organized by the Council of Canadians
Register: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZwuceGhrDkpHdJeX36ACBvUFKB-8UtyPirF
Join political economist Gordon Laxer in a webinar on his new report exposing the disturbing power and influence of multi-national foreign oil corporations on Canadian climate and energy policy, Thursday, January 27, 2022 at 7:30 pm.
Published by the Council of Canadians and the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives, "Posing as Canadian: How Big Foreign Oil Captures Canadian Energy and Climate Policy" reveals how foreign fossil fuel interests influence Canadian governments. The event is jointly hosted by Climate Action Muskoka (CAM), Environment Haliburton! (EH!) and Seniors for Climate Action Now! (SCAN!). The report found that foreign-owned corporations fund about 97 per cent of the revenue of the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers (CAPP) - the apex oil and gas lobby group in Canada. A 2018 law bans foreign entities from meddling in Canadian elections. But, if corporations list their headquarters in Canada, they can register as third-party advertisers for elections. Executives of foreign-owned oil corporations have made sizeable contributions to political parties and politicians who favour their agenda. The report recommends closing the loophole. WEBINAR: A Better Way in the Middle East, with Trita Parsi
Mon January 31 @ 7:00 pm EST
Organized by Massachusetts Peace Action
With decreased U.S. presence in the Middle East, diplomatic efforts in the region have rapidly increased, fostering talk and cooperation. The Baghdad dialogue, as it is known, has allowed Middle Eastern nations to stand on their own, shedding their dependence on the U.S. and American military involvement.
On Monday, January 31st, we will be joined by Trita Parsi to discuss how the Baghdad dialogue is essential in mitigating America's influence in the Middle East. He will discuss his article, in which he details the importance of such independent diplomacy and the unfavorable alternative of the Abraham Accords both for the U.S. and Middle Eastern nations. In his own words: "[I]f the Biden administration is serious about reducing America's military footprint in the Middle East, then the choice between the Baghdad dialogue and the Abraham Accords is clear. The former will rely on regional resources and leadership without American involvement. The latter will give new life to Middle Eastern rivalries that are bound to drag the United States back into the quicksands." WEBINAR: Canada at a Crossroads on China "Work Together or Perish Together" featuring Noam Chomsky
Friday, February 4, 2022
1pm Pacific/4 pm Eastern
In aiming to "develop and launch a comprehensive Indo-Pacific strategy" and strengthening ties to the US, the Trudeau government has signalled its intent to join US-led war preparations in the Asia Pacific and provoke China. Join world-renowned linguist and lifetime anti-war activist Noam Chomsky in a webinar to consider the pitfalls of closer alignment with the US empire, and why diplomacy and working with China are the only option to meet the global challenges ahead. Either "Work Together or Perish Together".
One of the most cited scholars alive, Noam Chomsky is considered a founder of modern linguistics and has published over 100 books, including his recent "Requiem for the American Dream." Noam Chomsky has been an anti-war, anti-capitalist activist for over 60 years and continues to call to account liberal elites for propping up inherently unjust systems that have brought us to the brink of climate catastrophe and nuclear annihilation. Noam Chomsky taught linguistics at MIT from 1955 to 2017 and is currently a laureate professor of linguistics at the University of Arizona.
This event is presented by Canada-China Focus, a new pan-Canadian, anti-racist project that aims to promote critical conversations and policy initiatives on Canada-China relations. Canada-China Focus is a join initiative of University of Victoria's Centre for Global Studies and the Canadian Foreign Policy Institute.
