Position: Land Acquisition Manager
Organization: Island Nature Trust
Location: Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island
About the Position
Reporting to the Executive Director and working in close collaboration with other staff members, the Land Acquisition Manager is responsible for all aspects of land acquisition including prospect site visits, ecological assessments, communication with landowners, appraisers, and legal council, commissioning appraisals, negotiating purchase and sales agreements, and ensuring proper mechanisms are in place for land protection. This position will also liaise with the Land Stewardship Program Manager in the development of land management plans and oversee the work of staff engaged with landowners who are protecting their land privately.
Responsibilities & Duties:
1. Land Acquisition: Working closely with the Executive Director and Business Services Manager, provides oversight and support to the Land Acquisition Committee by:
Acting as the main liaison with all landowners that approach the Trust to sell and/or donate land to the Trust
Performing site visits and ecological assessments of prospective acquisitions
Providing information and professional opinions on the ecological integrity of prospective land to the Land Acquisition Committee for consideration
Commissioning appropriate appraisals
Preparing and negotiating purchase and sales or donation agreements
Working with Trust lawyers to ensure legal, ethical, and technically sound transactions in adherence with the Canadian Land Trust Standards and Practices
Ensuring adherence to Trusts policies and guiding documents
Supporting key conservation partners in collaborative acquisition initiatives
Actively working towards planned targets and engaging with prospective landowners to build contiguous connected wildlife corridors
Supporting the Land Acquisition Committee by planning meetings, agendas, and capturing minutes
Other related duties as required
2. Land Protection: Providing oversight and guidance for the protection of Trust acquisitions and to landowners engaged in private protection programs by:
Liaising with the Land Stewardship Manager, develop written baseline documentation reports and land management plans for each acquisition
Ensuring the application of appropriate legal protection mechanisms, including restrictive covenants under provincial legislation as well as federal Ecological Gift status where needed
Managing and supporting staff tasked with providing guidance and information to landowners who have privately protected land or are interested in private protection
3. Managerial Activities: Participates in the management of the day-to-day operation of the Trust by:
Actively participating in the development of annual operational plans, communication plans, and budgets related to the Trusts programs
Conducting regular reviews and evaluations of acquisition activities, and revising activities as needed to ensure alignment with the Trusts mandates, policies, and external funding agreements
Completing and submitting required monthly, quarterly, and annual reports for the Board of Directors and external stakeholders
Developing and maintaining relationships with key stakeholders that support the successful implementation and growth of the Trust programs
Participating in appropriate provincial, regional and national groups/committees
Providing peer support to the Land Stewardship Manager and Species at Risk Manager when needed
Working closely with the Business Services Manager and Communications Manager on grant applications, proposals, and communication pieces to further the Trusts acquisitions and private protection goals
4. Human Resources Management: Providing leadership to employees and volunteers involved in acquisition and conservation program activities of the Trust by:
Participating in the recruitment and selection of program employees and volunteers
Assisting in orientation and training
Providing ongoing support, supervision, and evaluation
Participating in the development and implementation of recognition practices
Other:
Supporting the efforts of the Land Stewardship and Species at Risk Managers when needed by participating in field work when available
Other related duties consistent with the position
Requirements:
Education
Essential: Minimum BSc in Environmental Management, Environmental Science, Biology, or another degree relevant to the position
Desirable: MSc in Environmental Management, Environmental Science or similar
Desirable: Standard First Aid & CPR/AED Level C training
Desirable: Formal training in Geographic Information Systems
Experience
Essential: Minimum five years of experience working in a related environmental field
Essential: Experience conducting ecological assessments and bio-inventories in varying and sometimes challenging terrain
Essential: Experience using various geographic software applications (ArcPro, ArcGIS, StoryMaps, Avenza Maps, Google Earth)
Essential: Experience collecting and analyzing scientific data
Essential: Experience dealing with multiple stakeholders on complex projects
Desirable: Experience supervising staff
Desirable: Previous experience working with an NGO
Desirable: Experience in assessing vacant land for purchase
Skills
Essential: Strong written and verbal communications skills
Essential: Strong interpersonal skills
Essential: Ability to efficiently use Office 365 applications
Desirable: Demonstrated public speaking and presentation skills
Desirable: Media relations
Knowledge
Essential: Acadian (Wabanaki) forest flora and fauna identification, with the ability to identify species at risk, rare species, and invasive species
Desirable: Indigenous cultural competencies
Personal Attributes
Essential: A passion for land conservation and the ability to communicate the value of the Trusts mandate and vision to society
Essential: Strong attention to detail and commitment to meeting set timelines
Essential: Ability to forge positive relationships with many different stakeholders
Essential: Ability to work independently and also as part of a larger team
Essential: Eagerness to learn new skills
Terms of Employment:
This position is a full-time permanent position beginning as soon as possible

Annual professional development budget
Competitive salary range of $30-$38/hour to commensurate with experience
This position is based in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island and will require travel throughout the province
A valid class 5 drivers license and clear driving record are required. Island Nature Trust does have fleet vehicles, however there will be a number of occasions during the field season where staff are required to use their personal vehicles. Mileage is provided in these cases
This position supervises the work of two employees
Must be legally able to work in Canada
