Location: Centre Burlington, near Wolfville, Nova Scotia

About us:

MacDougall Meadows is a small farm that produces and sells pasture-raised chicken, turkey, pork, duck and eggs. We also do grass fed lamb, beef. and grow a variety of delicious vegetables for Halifax, the South Shore, and Hants County.

We are obsessed with producing traceable, high quality and secure food. We practice natural and sustainable food production methods. We use rotational grazing practices creating symbiotic relationships between our animals and pastures. Our vegetable production is based on permenant raised bed system.

Local accommodations are available for rent within biking distance.

Job title- Vegetable production supervisor
• Duration - Apr. 25 2022 - October/ November depending on growing season.
• Compensation- $14.00hr
• Hours- 40hrs week mon- Friday 7:30am- 4pm

Job description-

As vegetable production supervisor, the candidate will be responsible for overseeing and proper execution of delegated tasks by the farm manager and communicating them clearly to other vegetable production workers. Tasks include but are not limited to spreading compost, seed bed prep, transplanting and direct seeding of crops, weed management, irrigation, row cover and insect netting application, laying of ground cover and irrigation lines for transplanted beds, trellising and pruning of crops which require, mowing and whipper snipping around the vegetable production area and harvesting/ recording of crops for weekly markets.

Qualifications-
• Have an interest in farming and food production
• Work independently or part of a team
• Hard working
• Able to work in all weather conditions
• Positive enthusiastic attitude
• Attention to detail- can follow written or verbal instruction
• Previous farm experience an asset but not required
• Strong work ethic
• Flexible
• Punctual

Requirements-
• Kneel squat, bend and be on your feet for extended periods
• Ability to perform repetitive tasks (weeding, transplanting)
• Commit to the duration of the growing season
• Own transportation
• Provide own weather appropriate gear
• Comfortable lifting 50lbs repeatedly throughout the day.

Skills

Leadership- Keeping a positive attitude and happy work environment during a growing season can increase productivity of other workers. Leading team members through difficult and changing conditions such as extreme weather while still focusing on completion of tasks for the day.

Organization record keeping - Being able to accurately record weekly harvests and preparing them in a organized manner for presentation to farm manager.

Training capabilities - Guiding new employees through typical vegetable production tasks

Time management - schedule personal and team time effectively. Ability to prioritize tasks for best results and maximize efficiency.

Problem solving- pivot as needed when situations change. Remain positive when situations change and when plans must be adjusted based on situations out of your control. Example weather, shorts taffed.

Communication- Being able to clearly communicate instructions from farm manager to farm team. Communicating any problems with production to farm manager.

Job title: Farm Shop Supervisor
• Duration- Apr 25 2022 - October/ November depending on growing season.
• Compensation- $14hr
• Hours- full time 40hrs mon-friday 7:30am- 4 pm, occasional saturday

Job description-

As the farm shop supervisor the candidate will be responsible for overseeing the processing packaging portion of the farm. Tasks and duties to be performed include but are not limited to the following. Wash and pack eggs weekly, wash/ pack vegetables on harvest days, receive weekly meat delivery, assemble online orders received and prepare inventory for weekly farmers markets.

The candidate will also be in charge of farm gate sales from the farm shop (fridays 9-4) and may also be asked to work the odd Saturday market.

Other responsibilities include keeping clean and sanitary work environment through out the processing and packaging building.

Qualifications-

• Strong work ethic

• Flexible
• Familiar with the Square POS
• Good interpersonal skills
• Organized
• Competent with basic technology ( laptop/ tablet)

• Able to commit to the growing season
• Comfortable lifting 50lbs repeatedly throughout the day

Skills-

Organization- being able to assemble both market inventories and weekly orders to be distributed at different pickup locations and markets.

Communication- keeping the farm manager informed on current inventories, any problems or broken equipment in the packing a processing area.

Problem solving- being able to observe any inefficiency’s during the wash pack process’s and implement new protocols to become more efficient. Finding new creative ways to use cooler space during peak harvest season.

Time management- adapting to weekly changes in season vegetables and the amount of time each takes to properly wash and pack, prioritizing vegetable which need to be chilled, washed and put into the cooler before unrefrigerated crops.

Job title- General Farm Labourer (2) positions
• Duration- June 1 - Sept.
• Compensation- minimum wage
• Hours- 35hr week
• position 1 8:30 am - 4pm Sunday- Thursday
• position 2 8:30 am - 4pm Tuesday- Saturday

Job description-

General farm labour position candidates will be responsible for helping wherever help is need on a mixed farm. Task may include but at not limited to, helping with vegetable production, collecting eggs, tending to livestock, general farm maintenance, mowing, whipper snipping and fencing.

Qualifications-
• Have an interest in farming and food production
• Work independently or part of a team
• Hard working
• Able to work in all weather conditions
• Positive enthusiastic attitude
• Attention to detail- can follow written or verbal instruction
