The Department of Environment and Local Government is seeking a Climate Change Adaptation Specialist to join the Climate Change Secretariat team.

The Climate Change Secretariat (CCS) coordinates initiatives promoting the reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and the adaptation to the multiple impacts of climate change. The CCS also focuses on initiatives related to education, awareness, and capacity-building and is responsible for coordinating the implementation of New Brunswick’s Climate Change Action Plan. The Secretariat works with government departments and agencies to ensure that actions on climate change are integrated into governmental policies, programs, and day-to-day decisions. The CCS also engages local governments such as municipalities, non-government partners, stakeholders, and multiple sectors to encourage lower carbon investments and practices, and facilitates and supports climate adaptation activities.

What you will do?

As a member of the Climate Change Secretariat, reporting to the Director of Climate Change Adaptation, you will engage and assist various stakeholders and sectors (i.e. municipalities, First Nations communities, Regional Service Commissions, government departments, non-government organizations, professional and industry associations, researchers, infrastructure and utilities owners, the natural resources, agriculture, tourism, business, industry sectors, among others, and the public) by providing information, guidance and training on climate change data, climate change adaptation tools, and best adaptation practices that build climate resilience.

You will facilitate and assist New Brunswick municipalities with their climate adaptation efforts that include conducting Vulnerability Assessments and developing their Climate Change Adaptation Plans, while also providing support and services to other sectors engaged in adaptation.

You will also serve as the New Brunswick climate services representative for CLIMAtlantic, Atlantic Canada’s new climate services hub, which is responsible for providing climate data and services to Atlantic Canadians. Your objective will be to respond to the needs of New Brunswickers and ultimately deliver climate data and tools, information and awareness services, and training to various clients, sectors, and numerous stakeholders outlined above across the province.

Your work will be essential in building New Brunswick’s adaptative capacity and increasing the province’s collective resilience to the impacts of a changing climate.

Work environment
• Office location: Flexible location within New Brunswick
• Office layout: with surrounding open cubicles
• Your Team: Small collaborative team of 12 – including climate specialists, analysts, engineers, economist, strategist, and engagement specialist.
• Standard hours of work: Monday - Friday, 8:15-4:30 (office schedule) and flexible work that includes working evenings and travel, primarily within New Brunswick.

Who you are

You possess extensive knowledge of climate change science, climate change adaptation practices, stakeholder and community engagement approaches, communicating climate change to various audiences, and have extensive knowledge of land-use planning and/or engineering.

You are technically strong in the areas of climate change science and have extensive knowledge of climate change adaptation approaches/measures that can be adopted by homeowners, landowners, local governments, infrastructure owners, various sectors, and other clients, to increase their resilience to the impacts of climate change.

You possess strong interpersonal and communication skills and are fluently bilingual in English and French at a professional level, as you will deliver numerous public presentations that are technical in nature, explaining the multiple aspects of climate change and how to incorporate adaptation in decision-making.

You are self motivated, work well in team settings, can problem-solve creatively and are safety-minded. You seek feedback from colleagues and clients and are open to critique that helps improve outcomes.

You are concerned for the wellbeing of New Brunswickers, have a strong personal interest in climate change, and a desire to communicate climate change adaptation to achieve community sustainability.

You can present at a professional and technical level in both French and English to best serve all New Brunswickers. You treat all people with the utmost respect, in a polite and professional manner that is courteous and always demonstrates kindness.

Your attitude, skills and interests are just as important as your area of study. We are looking for diverse backgrounds that bring a combination of the following: 

Essential qualifications
• Pay Band 5: University degree in Environmental Sciences or Environmental Management, Planning, Engineering, Education, preferably with coursework related to Climate Change, Planning, Engineering, or Environmental Management. An equivalent amount of higher-level education, a minimum of five (5) years of climate change adaptation work experience, or certification, that meets the overall requirements of the position.
• Pay Band 4: University degree in Environmental Sciences or Environmental Management, Planning, Engineering, Education, preferably with coursework related to Climate Change, Planning, Engineering, or Environmental Management. An equivalent amount of higher-level education, a minimum of four (4) years of climate change adaptation work experience, or certification, that meets the overall requirements of the position.
• Pay Band 3: University degree in Environmental Sciences or Environmental Management, Planning, Engineering, Education, preferably with coursework related to Climate Change, Planning, Engineering, or Environmental Management. An equivalent amount of higher-level education, a minimum of three (3) years of climate change adaptation work experience, or certification, that meets the overall requirements of the position.

An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered.

Written and spoken competence in English and French. Please state your language capability

• Comprehensive understanding of the effects of a changing climate on communities, infrastructures and natural resources;
• Knowledge in the use of climate change models and climate scenarios;

Wage

Pay Band 5: $2,308 to $3,224 bi-weekly, based on 36.25 hours per week

Pay Band 4: $2,016 to $2,820 bi-weekly, based on 36.25 hours per week

Pay Band 3: $1,835 to $2,565 bi-weekly, based on 36.25 hours per week
