Position: Decolonizing Climate Policy (DCP) Researcher
Organization: Indigenous Climate Action
Location: virtual/ remote/ work from home anywhere in Canada

Indigenous Climate Action (ICA) is looking for someone who is ambitious, personable and passionately committed to true Indigenous Climate Justice to serve as its Decolonizing Climate Policy (DCP) Researcher. This position requires a deep understanding of the intersectional approaches of climate justice and Indigenous rights in application to research contexts.

This is a remote, work from home, online working position with priority given to Indigenous people who live in so-called Canada.

Position Summary

We are looking for someone who demonstrates an ability to develop collaborative relationships, conducts strong policy analysis, and frames advice on strategic and sensitive policy issues. As the DCP Researcher, reporting to the Research Manager, working to coordinate research projects, develop and deliver positions and statements on climate justice policy and intersections of Indigenous rights at the national and international levels, and provide strategic advice for ICA participation in climate and Indigenous rights forums.

Job Responsibilities

Reporting to the Research Manager, the DCP Researcher will:

(50%) Research and Writing
• Support and/or lead in the development of public position papers and critiques of emerging climate and Indigenous rights policies - focussing on Decolonizing Climate Policy topics, including but not limited to, carbon market mechanisms, nature-based solutions; best practices for climate solutions rooted in Indigenous rights and sovereignty.
• Support Research Manager in materials, and briefing notes to support ICA’S participation in National and International forums on climate change and Indigenous rights (ie. UNFCCC, UNPFII, etc)
• Supporting and/or leading research projects and/or aspects of projects as they arise or are identified.
• Conducting regular environmental scans to identify any critical policy issues related to climate and Indigenous rights and how they may impact the work of ICA.
• Provide regular communication, reports and advice to the Research Manager in a timely and accurate way.

(20%) Team Engagement
• Participation in ICA Team meetings, including Steering Committee Meetings
• Collaboration with Pod Members to support alignments, information sharing, and work planning
• Peer support with other ICA team members regarding research needs as they arise within ICA’s programs and campaigns.

(20%) Participating in external partnerships
• Support in a variety of committees/working groups related to climate and Indigenous rights both internally and externally.
• Support Research Manager in external climate and Indigenous rights coalition meetings to remain abreast of current issues and trends.

(10%) Promotion of Research
• Work in collaboration with ICA Communications and Programs to develop strategic partnerships and collaborations for the dissemination of ICA position papers and critiques of emerging policy.
• Support or lead webinars/workshops
• Assist in reporting back for grants and funding related to research work.

• Ability to be agile: to anticipate, assess, and readily adapt to changing priorities, maintain resilience in times of uncertainty and effectively work in a changing environment is essential.
• Commitment to lifelong learning and the desire to invest in the development of the long-term capability of yourself and others.
• Ability to adapt research language that is accessible and relevant to Indigenous communities.
• Proven agility and time management skills to work effectively within tight timelines in a politically sensitive environment.
• Strategic thinker — able to identify emerging issues, see how things fit together in the “big picture" and creatively use available information.
• Clear understanding of the intersections of Indigenous rights and colonial policy
• Clear understanding of the functions and responsibilities played by intergovernmental and settler and Indigenous relations.
• Knowledge of federal/provincial/territorial organizational climate and Indigenous rights policies and issues.
• Comfortable with building new relationships and navigating the diversity of opinions and tensions that can exist in a community
• Excellent analytical skills to research and provide an accurate and thorough analysis including recommendations.

Qualifications and Experience
• A combination of education and experience. A post-secondary degree or certificate in a related field (e.g., education, social sciences, business, economics, environmental, Indigenous studies, and political science) with a minimum 2 years of related experience.
• Experience in relationship building skills and the ability to work with a team.
• Demonstrated strong written and oral communication skills to prepare and present clear advice through briefing materials, in response to action requests, and in meetings.
• Experience working with Indigenous-led organizations and structures that challenges systems of colonization, white supremacy, patriarchy and capitalism.
• Member of an Indigenous community and fluency in an Indigenous language an asset

The position is full time and entails a 35 hour work week, however as per ICA’s Four Day work week policy we strive to work 30 hours per week most weeks. When safe, some travel and evening/ weekend hours may be required. The successful candidate must be willing to be flexible and work hours required to meet ICA expectations. A Criminal Record Check along with Child and Adult Abuse Registry checks may be required conditions of employment. ICA can assist with this process if need be.
