Positions: Research Assistant
Reports to: Director of Science
Organization: Oceana Canada
Preferred location: Halifax, Nova Scotia
Anticipated employment period: April 11th to September 2nd, 2022. 40h/week
Oceana Canada is an independent charity committed to rebuilding Canadas oceans by winning science-based policy victories that increase biodiversity and abundance. We are hiring two Research Assistants to synthesize information through literature searches, government reports and communications to update our Fishery Audit in 2022 and to provide research support for our fisheries and habitat campaigns (oceana.ca/en/campaigns/). The ideal candidates will have previous experience with oceans and fisheries conservation in Canada, have strong research, writing and analytical skills and are self-motived and able to work independently.
Duties and Responsibilities
Synthesize information through literature searches, government reports, management plans and other sources that will be used to update our Fishery Audit in 2022.
Provide research and campaign support for our fisheries and habitat protection goals.
Write, edit, and prepare reports and policy recommendations with meticulous attention to detail.
Provide additional research support related to fisheries and marine conservation to inform and support the goals and strategies of Oceana Canada's campaigns, as needed.
Requirements
University degree (or equivalent) with practical and relevant experience.
Strong knowledge of fisheries science and marine conservation issues in Canada.
The Fishery Audit assistant must be highly proficient with Microsoft Excel.
Excellent writing, editing, communication and research skills are required.
Must have the ability to handle many tasks simultaneously in a dynamic work environment with speed, accuracy, and a positive attitude; show initiative, and exhibit insightful planning and execution of responsibilities.
Experience and knowledge regarding Pacific salmon conservation units and stock assessments is an asset.
GIS experience is an asset.
The successful candidate must be available for full-time work in Canada.
