Position: Fair Trade+ Coffee Marketing Summer Lead
Type: summer job / age 30 & under
Organization: Maritimes-Guatemala Breaking the Silence
Location: Based in Halifax Regional Municipality or Wolfville (required to work Saturday mornings at the Halifax Forum Farmers Market). Occasional meetings with Just Us! in Hortonville/Grand Pre and occasional travel to Tatamagouche Centre, Nova Scotia (hybrid)
Contract dates: Saturday, May 14th - 20th of August, 2022 (14-week contract)
Schedule: 35 hours per week (remote work for 4 days Tuesday-Friday; Saturday mornings on-site)
Remuneration: $15/hour
Special requirements (based on funding):
Must have attended school in the spring and be returning to school in the fall of 2022
Must be based in and have lived in Nova Scotia for at least 6 months prior to start date

Organizational Background
BTS was established 30 years ago in response to the genocide and mass displacement of communities that occurred during the internal armed conflict in Guatemala. The network includes over 300 volunteer members throughout the Maritimes. BTS supports Guatemalan human rights and community development groups working for ongoing social, economic, environmental, and cultural justice. BTS centers the interconnectedness between the North and the South as well as the responsibility of Canadians to engage in solidarity work by undertaking advocacy and education initiatives in Canada.
Position Description
Fair Trade+ Coffee Marketing Summer Lead will support BTS in the promotion of their Fair Trade+ coffee initiative. The successful applicant will work with BTS members in Halifax to support and promote the weekly sale of coffee and awareness of Fair Trade. Under the supervision of BTS staff and with the support of JustUs!, the Fair Trade+ Coffee Marketing Summer Lead will promote BTS coffee by producing written and visual content.
The ideal candidate for this position will have advanced organizational skills, be highly reliable, have experience handling cash and food, and possess a keen interest in researching and promoting social justice, Fair Trade+, anti-oppressive partnerships, and BTSs work.
Key activities for this position include:
Weekly co-management of the BTS Coffee Kiosk at the Halifax Forum Farmers Market on Saturday mornings (7:30 am to 1:30pm). This includes setting up and tearing down the kiosk coffee equipment and supplies and serving the public from 9am-1pm.
Promoting the purchase and use of BTS coffee through visual and written content for brochures, information packages, social media, newsletters, and blog platforms.
Conducting research to learn about fair trade, Small Producers Partnership, the Small Producers Symbol (SPP), BTSs partners, especially the Highlands Committee of Small Farmers (CCDA), and current events in Guatemala.
Participating in regular meetings with BTS staff and supervisors.
Conducting administrative tasks including note-taking, file organization, progress tracking, ordering and maintaining inventory, and the use of excel.
Qualifications of Ideal Candidate:
Experience transforming research into communications tools, including blogs, graphics, videos, webinars, presentations, etc.
Experience using graphic design applications
Interested in, and has a demonstrated commitment to, anti-oppression, community organizing, social justice, and solidarity work
Works well in collaborative processes
Possesses the organizational skills to work independently
Highly reliable
Possesses high cross-cultural awareness and strong interpersonal communication skills
Past experience handling food and providing customer service
Past experience handling money
Holds a valid driver's license and has access to a car
Will be considered assets: Knowledge of Guatemala/Central American history and socio-political context. An understanding of fair trade, Small Producers Partnerships, Small Producers Symbol (SPP), and Just Us!s approach to Fair Trade.
