About the Loaded Ladle

The Loaded Ladle is a non-profit open food cooperative based out of the Dalhousie Students’ Union Building. The Loaded Ladle provides accessible, sustainable, locally-sourced free food on the Dalhousie University campus. Our collective of students and workers manages this alternative food service. 

Key terms

Food justice: the acknowledgement that our food system is not neutral; we do not have a level playing field. The rules, who gets to set the rules, and the functioning of our food systems contain oppressive and colonizing forces that create and sustain inequities.

Food sovereignty: emerged from La Via Campesina, a global peasant movement, as the right of peoples to healthy and culturally appropriate food produced through ecologically sound and sustainable methods, as well as the right to define their own food and agricultural systems.

Anti-oppressive framework: This framework actively works against oppression. Oppression is the use of power to disempower, marginalize, silence or otherwise subordinate one social group or category, often in order to further empower and/or privilege the oppressor. An anti-oppressive framework actively fights against racism, ableism, classism, homophobia, transphobia, colonialism and all other forms of intersecting oppressions.

Consensus based-decision making: a creative and dynamic way of reaching agreement between all members of a group. Instead of simply voting for an item and having the majority of the group getting their way, a group using consensus is committed to finding solutions that everyone actively supports, or at least can live with. This ensures that all opinions, ideas and concerns are taken into account. Through listening closely to each other, the group aims to come up with proposals that work for everyone.

Non-hierarchical framework: a flat management structure, where employees work towards a common purpose, without a designated management team.

Description

The Loaded Ladle is looking to hire a part-time staff member to coordinate a gardening project.

This part time, seasonal position with The Loaded Ladle will lead and coordinate all aspects of a project to build free garden beds and planter boxes for/with community members (such as in backyards, balconies, workspaces, schools, etc.). Priority for the recipients of garden beds/boxes should be given to individuals or groups who may be experiencing food insecurity. The successful candidate will have some freedom to decide on the details and scope of this community gardening project.

Tasks include:
• Design and build free raised garden beds and/or planter boxes for individuals and community groups.
• Community outreach: Recruit volunteers to help with garden installation and find community members who are interested in having a garden space constructed for them. Create outreach materials for social media, newsletter, website, etc.
• Coordinate with volunteers and garden bed recipients to schedule garden work parties.
• Orient, guide, and instruct volunteers for construction of the gardens.
• Ensure the safety of all volunteers during work parties.
• Create a welcoming environment following an anti-oppressive framework for community partners and volunteers.
• Purchase materials and transport them to different work sites.
• If the staff member is not able to transport materials themselves, they can organize volunteers to assist with this.
*Note: All staff have access to the Loaded Ladle’s Car Share membership.
• Develop and follow a budget using the funding allotted to this program.
• Seek out material and/or financial donations to support the program and prioritize the use of salvaged or repurposed construction materials in order to reduce costs and environmental impact.
• Provide seeds and/or seedlings for community members to grow in the gardens. This can be done by starting seedlings (using Loaded Ladle resources and with support of other staff) and/or garnering donations.
• Create and provide gardening-related resources to garden bed recipients with the support of other staff.
• Create a final report to summarize and provide feedback on the project.
• Track costs and provide a cost breakdown in the final report at the end of the term.

Qualifications
• Enthusiasm for gardening, food justice, and food sovereignty.
• Passionate about building community and able to engage volunteers.
• Ability to take initiative on tasks and work independently for the leadership of a project.
• Basic knowledge of growing plants, especially food plants, pollinator plants, and native plants.
• Driver’s license is not required, but an asset. The candidate will be required to attend different work sites throughout HRM and organize the transportation of materials (building supplies, soil, plants, etc.)
• Previous experience in basic construction is not required, but an asset. The candidate should be comfortable using hand tools to construct simple garden beds and planter boxes.
• Previous experience in farming or food production is not required, but an asset.
• Willingness to work with and instruct volunteers – who may have little gardening knowledge – with kindness and patience.
• Committed to anti-oppression and consensus-based decision making.
• Enjoys working in a non-hierarchical and collaborative workplace.

Funding-Related Requirements

This position is funded by the Canada Summer Jobs Program; this means applicants must be:
• Between 15 and 30 years of age (inclusive) at the start of employment;
• A Canadian Citizen, permanent resident, or person on whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act*; and
• Legally entitled to work according to the relevant provincial / territorial legislation and regulations.

*International students are not eligible. Recent immigrants are eligible if they are Canadian Citizens or permanent residents.

Working Environment
• For administrative tasks, the candidate will have the option to work from home and/or work in the Loaded Ladle’s office space, which is located in the Dalhousie Student Union Building.
• This job will include working in-person for construction of the gardens, and the majority of work will take place outdoors at various locations across HRM (geographic scope can be determined by the successful candidate).
• This job will include frequent driving/moving around the city (by bicycle, public transport, etc.) to transport materials and get to different work sites.
• The candidate will be expected to attend occasional staff, Board, and committee meetings in-person (though accommodations can also be made for attending virtually).
• This job will require the ability to lift heavy items and be physically active during garden work parties. Please let us know if you have any concerns about this.
