Hiring: Priority Place Engagement Assistant
Organization: Mersey Tobeatic Research Institute
Location: Remote with occasional field days and meetings in at the office in Kempt, NS
Anticipated Duration: 1 year with possibility of extension
Salary Information: $20/hr
Hours of Work: 35 hrs/wk
Position Summary:
The Priority Place Engagement Intern will support MTRI in the delivery of its conservation implementation project in the southwest Nova Scotia Priority Place. In partnership with the Kespukwitk Conservation Collaborative, the project supports ecosystem-based conservation efforts and recovery of species at risk in southwest Nova Scotia.
The intern will support the Communication and Municipal Outreach Coordinator by liaising with partners and to effectively engage a variety of sectors including partner organizations, landowners, industry, municipalities, and government agencies. Duties may include, but not be limited, to coordination and facilitation of meetings, development of user-friendly and visually appealing information packages for print and online, social media outreach, mapping, report writing, and assisting with field-based conservation and research projects.
The position will be based at MTRIs research station in Kempt, NS. A hybrid in-office/remote work model will be considered so long as the assistant is able to travel to MTRI for meetings, workshops, and other in-person requirements. Additional travel may also be required. Regular work is Monday - Friday, 35 hours per week, but some evening and weekend work may be required occasionally. Roles and Responsibilities:
The intern will report to the Communication and Municipal Outreach Coordinator and MTRIs Co-Directors. The intern will work closely with MTRI staff and partner organizations to:
Collate information resources on ecosystems and species at risk in Southwest Nova Scotia to create online tools to help engage landowners and municipalities in species at risk stewardship, such as:
Develop and update content for the new KCC and MTRIs websites
Promote the conservation work carried out by partners through other online and in-person opportunities
Develop pilot projects to support municipal stewardship efforts across Kespukwitk
Assist the Communications and Municipal Outreach Co-ordinator in organizing workshops, training workshops and meetings
Develop newsletters, annual reports, and journal articles to highlight conservation efforts across the region
Help MTRI project staff with data entry, analysis, field work and reporting as needed
Ensure that project deliverables are met in a timely manner and meet budget requirements
Qualifications/Skills:
The ideal candidate will have a background in one of more of the following:
Degree or diploma in GIS mapping and data analysis or equivalent experience
Demonstrable or qualification/experience in graphic design, website development and/or story map development
Degree, Diploma, or experience in environmental conservation
Knowledge of Open Standards for Conservation / Theories of Change
Experience with social sciences or Community Based Social Marketing
Familiarity with online communication tools and platforms
Experience working with municipalities or municipal planning
Candidates should:
Have strong communication and writing skills
Be a team player with good interpersonal skills
Have familiarity with non-profit organizations and environmental or conservation work
Have a valid drivers license
