Position: Lakeshore Outreach Assistant
Organization: Mersey Tobeatic Research Institute
Location: Kempt, Nova Scotia (near Kejimkujik National Park)

Anticipated Duration: March 31, 2023
Salary Information: $20-$22/hr, depending on experience
Hours of Work: 35 hrs/wk

Position Summary:

The Lakeshore Outreach Assistant will support MTRI in the delivery of its conservation implementation project in the southwest Nova Scotia Priority Place. In partnership with the Kespukwitk Conservation Collaborative, the project supports ecosystem-based conservation efforts and recovery of species at risk in southwest Nova Scotia.

The assistant will support the Sr. Wildlife Biologist and the Communication and Municipal Outreach Coordinator by developing an outreach and lakeshore remediation program for priority lakes containing Atlantic Coastal Plain Flora and develop information packages for landowners and municipal and provincial government planners and biologists. Duties may include, but not be limited, to coordination and facilitation of meetings, development of user-friendly and visually appealing information packages for print and online, mapping, report writing, and assisting with field-based conservation and research projects.

The position will be based at MTRI’s research station in Kempt, NS. A hybrid in-office/remote work model will be considered so long as the assistant is able to travel to MTRI for meetings, workshops, and other in-person requirements. Additional travel may also be required. Regular work is Monday-Friday, 35 hours per week, but some evening and weekend work may be required occasionally.

Roles and Responsibilities:

The assistant will report to the Sr. Wildlife Biologist and MTRI’s Co-Directors. The assistant will work closely with MTRI staff and partner organizations to:
• Develop an outreach and lakeshore remediation program for priority lakes containing at-risk Atlantic Coastal Plain Flora, and corresponding information packages for landowners
• Contact municipalities to become familiar with process for landuse planning around lakeshores and work to develop recommendations to increase protection for Atlantic Coastal Plain Flora
• Develop social media posts to engage the public about Atlantic Coastal Plain Flora
• Help MTRI project staff with data entry, analysis, field work and reporting as needed
• Ensure that project deliverables are met in a timely manner and meet budget requirements

Qualifications/Skills:

The ideal candidate will have a background in one of more of the following:
• Familiarity with Atlantic Coastal Plain Flora
• Knowledge of municipal or provincial planning or policy development
• Demonstrable or qualification/experience in graphic design
• Degree, Diploma, or experience in environmental conservation
• Knowledge of Open Standards for Conservation / Theories of Change
• Experience with social sciences or Community Based Social Marketing
• Familiarity with online communication tools and platforms

Candidates should:
• Have strong communication and writing skills
• Be a team player with good interpersonal skills
• Have familiarity with non-profit organizations and environmental or conservation work
• Have a valid driver’s license
