Hiring: Marine Planning & Community Engagement Officer

The Ecology Action Centre is a dynamic and vibrant environmental charity based in Nova Scotia. This year the Ecology Action Centre is celebrating 50 years of taking action and leadership on critical issues from biodiversity protection to climate change to environmental justice. We are grounded in community and act as strong watchdog for a just and sustainable society.

The Ecology Action Centre’s Marine team works locally, nationally and internationally towards protecting marine ecosystems and maintaining sustainable fisheries, which support vibrant coastal communities. The Marine Planning and Community Engagement Officer supports EAC’s Marine work in Gros Morne area in western Newfoundland (NF) and the project runs out of an office in Norris Point, NF. There is a requirement to live nearby in order to travel regularly to the Gros Morne region for work events and alternate working from home or the office in Norris Point, NF where the project is run from.

ABOUT YOU

You thrive working in a fast paced, dynamic, collaborative environment and are looking for an opportunity to put your skills to use at the community level with the non-profit sector. Your ability to engage others will assist with the marine planning and community engagement activities protection in the Gros Morne region of western Newfoundland.

WHAT YOU WILL DO
• Schedule and organize community engagement sessions related to marine planning and protection in the Gros Morne region of western Newfoundland
• Assist project lead in facilitation of community engagement sessions
• Manage and analyze community and research data
• Liaise with GIS analyst to create maps of community and research data
• Undertake desktop research and literature reviews
• Contribute to technical report writing
• Assist with ROV-based field research as needed
• Assist with development of public-facing communications materials
• Provide additional support to Marine Team members on their projects, as needed
• Participate in and support the overall work of the Ecology Action Centre

WHAT YOU WILL BRING
• Background in biological or social sciences with an ability to review and synthesize peer-reviewed literature and technical reports
• Experience in engaging the public in scientific and/or conservation issues
• Ability to communicate effectively with decision-makers, scientists, community members and a broad range of other partners
• Ability to work individually and as part of a team
• Proficiency in MS Office applications, particularly Excel, Word and PowerPoint
• Familiarity with GIS software (ArcGIS)
• Demonstrated ability to work independently and in a collaborative team environment, and effectively allocate your time to complete important productive tasks
• Strong communications skills both oral and written
• Proven ability to involve individuals, community networks, government and industry in order to gather relevant information
• Capable of analyzing, interpreting and summarizing statistical data and policies
• Must have a valid driver’s license and live in or travel regularly to the Gros Morne region of western Newfoundland

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
• Fixed 12-month term starting in October (as soon as possible)
• 37.5 hours a week with an hourly starting wage between $19.67 - $21.56 based on level of knowledge, experience and skills.
• Four weeks of paid vacation, 10 paid health days, and 12 paid Holidays, cost-shared benefits plan.
• Participate in EAC’s 4-day work week pilot rom October 2022 to end of June 2023.
