Position: Stewardship Coordinator
Organization: Nova Scotia Nature Trust
Location: Combination of office and fieldwork; travel 2-5 days/weeks during field season (typically May-Oct). Office work may be conducted at the office in Dartmouth, or hybrid. With those conditions met, the candidate may live anywhere in NS.

The Nova Scotia Nature Trust is seeking a new Stewardship Coordinator to care for its more than 25 000 acres. In this role, you will explore and document new Nature Trust lands and their species, employ creative problem-solving to tackle stewardship challenges and direct volunteers and contractors alike to accomplish goals. The variety of the work is unending in this role, and it requires an energetic individual who loves to travel, hike and paddle and doesnt mind crawling through coastal thickets one day and meeting with partners the next. Working with a small but dedicated stewardship team and a small army of volunteers, your new and innovative ideas will be welcome, and you will have the opportunity to help shape how the Nature Trust stewards its lands.
Roles and Responsibilities:
Reporting to the Stewardship Manager, the Stewardship Coordinator leads the development and implementation of an annual program of stewardship activities on all Nature Trust conservation lands.
Stewardship Responsibilities:
Conducts baseline studies, writes baseline documentation reports and ensures additional stewardship program resources are used in the completion of baselines
Writes, assists with the completion or allocates resources to ensure the completion of stewardship plans and related stewardship documents for Nature Trust conservation lands
In collaboration with the stewardship team, plans and delivers activities on Nature Trust conservation lands that support property or regional stewardship objectives
Oversees all property/habitat restoration and invasive species removal
Ensures integration of best practices into all aspects of stewardship program (including compliance with Canadian Land Trust Standards and Practices)
Builds relationships and communicates with neighbours, local governments, community leaders and others to reduce threats/increase awareness, educate and encourage support for stewardship efforts.
In collaboration with the Stewardship Manager, coordinates visitor and recreation planning/ management including, but not limited to: trails, access, signage, recreation management
Provides subject matter expertise and guidance to Nature Trust committees and Board
Oversees creation and management of land use and trail agreements and their implementation and updating
Manage contractors doing stewardship and/or restoration work
Oversees and supports stewardship issues resolution, including the use of community meetings
Plans and oversees volunteer and public work parties and corporate events to achieve stewardship goals
Oversees implementation of property stewardship-related policies/procedures, record-keeping, information management
Communication Responsibilities
In collaboration with the communications team, assists with the development of and helps to deliver communications, education and marketing materials and tactics to support the stewardship program and the Philanthropy and Engagement program
Assists in public-facing stewardship-related events, work parties and guided hikes
Develops and maintains collaborative partnerships to support stewardship activities and enhance capacity
Administrative/Technical Responsibilities:
Provides mapping and GIS resources to support stewardship
Conducts an annual property file review to ensure records are up-to-date, donor wishes are being respected and issues and human uses are up-to-date on Landscape
Communicates with insurance providers about specific liabilities
Leadership/ Mentoring Responsibilities:
Supervises occasional temporary contract staff
Supports and directs volunteer Property Guardians and trail groups in stewardship activities
Financial Responsibilities:
Carries out required activities within delegated authority and in compliance with Nature Trust financial policies and procedures.
Other responsibilities as required
Qualifications and Education Requirements:
The successful candidate will possess post-secondary training in conservation, ecology, biology or related fields
The ideal candidate will have experience working in a conservation role
An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered
Job Specific Knowledge and Abilities:
GIS capabilities, including the ability to use ArcGIS to create and modify maps, extract data and inform decisions
Ability to competently use the Microsoft Office Suite, especially Word and Excel, and to learn to use the stewardship database, Landscape
Ability to identify common Nova Scotia terrestrial species and the ability to use keys and guides to identify unknown species
Ability to navigate extremely varied terrain on foot, over long distances, using GPS or compass
Ability to kayak or canoe, or the willingness to learn
Ability to be flexible and work in an unstructured environment
Ability to work independently while maintaining team relationships
Ability to be extremely organized while managing a team consisting of Nature Trust staff as well as Property Guardian volunteers
Valid drivers license
Salary Range: $ 43,000 to $58,000
Working Conditions
This position requires a combination of office and fieldwork. During field season, you will be required to travel for between two and five days during most weeks, paddling and hiking to and through new Nature Trust properties. Evenings and weekends may sometimes be required for work parties or events. Fieldwork may require camping at or near worksites.
Fieldwork takes place typically from the end of May to October. Office work may be conducted at the office in Dartmouth, or in a hybrid work arrangement.
