SEEKING

STEPHEN FOSTER - (Caucasian Man, 37) tall, well-built; fervent about music,
emotionally hobbled in other ways; nearly penniless, with a titanic
determination to create, nearly burning up with it; though he drinks
constantly, he never shows the slightest sign of inebriation; his clothes
were expensive and fashionable when purchased by his wife in Pittsburgh
nearly a decade ago; everyone in Nelly Bly’s establishment knows him as
“Milton Moore.”
Vocal- Pop/Rock Baritone, Must have a solid G.

NELLY BLY - (African American Woman, late 20’s - mid 30’s) born to slaves
who bought their freedom; she and the late Willie O’Brien created the
success of their saloon and dancehall; driven to hold onto every bit of her
freedom and current power; a resourceful and optimistic businesswoman, she
also possesses emotional acuity and a tender side that she saves for those
she trusts. Vocal- R&B Mezzo, Belt to a D.

THOMAS JEFFERSON - (African American Man, early 20’s), escaped on foot from
his bondage in Tennessee; powerfully devoted to a dream of exploiting his
talents, making his own way in the world, and he does not intend to allow
any person or any reason to stop him. MUST BE A STRONG DANCER. MUST TAP.
Vocal- Pop/R&B High Baritone/tenor - Full voice to an Ab.

OWEN DUIGNAN - (Caucasian Man, early 20’s) a recent immigrant from Ireland;
he too burns with the need to make his way in this new world, wanting more
than anything to become white; he knows enough about the nature of America
to understand the transitional nature of people. MUST BE A STRONG DANCER.
MUST TAP. Vocal- Pop/Rock Irish Tenor - Sings to a High Bb. Irish accent.

DANIEL JENKINS - (Caucasian Man, 20’s - mid 30’s) the black sheep of a
wealthy uptown English Protestant family in the cotton trade; close friends
with Willie O’Brien and Nelly Bly when they first established their saloon,
he now yearns for power in the roiling and corruptive world of New York City
politics. Vocal- Rock Baritone, gravel voice, sings to a G.

REVEREND JACOB JOHNSON - (African American Man, late 20’s – late 30’s)
driven from his first congregation in Princeton when local authorities
targeted him for his participation in support for the Underground Railroad,
he founded his own parish in the Five Points; finding in the Bible the
source of his beliefs in agency and freedom for all, he works ceaselessly on
behalf of the downtrodden and the spiritually lacking. Vocal- Bass/Baritone,
contemporary MT.

ANNIE O’BRIEN JOHNSON - (Caucasian Woman, 20’s) sister of the late
Willie O’Brien;
married to Reverend Jacob Johnson, she is a true believer in his mission and
goodness; nothing else matters in her universe. Vocal- Mezzo/Alto - sings to
a Bb. Irish accent.

JANEY FOSTER - (Caucasian Woman, 33) pretty, raised in luxury; works as a
telegraph operator in Greensburg, Pennsylvania. A scorned woman who doesn’t
suffer fools. Vocal - High Belt Contemporary Pop/Rock - mix belt to a High
F.

Notes for the purpose of casting:

Hard Times the musical is based on the music of Stephen Foster and the
events of the draft riots that took place in New York July 1863.
The Five Points where the action takes place was the most well known centre
of black and interracial social life, however the enactment of the
Emancipation Proclamation in January 1863 and subsequent draft lottery where
those who could afford to hire a substitute or pay the government three
hundred dollars might avoid enlistment. Blacks, who were not considered
citizens, were exempt from the draft.
Initially intended to express anger at the draft, the protests turned into
a race riot, with white rioters, predominantly Irish immigrants attacking
black people throughout the city.

Our story clearly delineates 2 exciting authentic cultures stylized thru
music and dance.
The depiction of these events is reflected in Casting.
