[CANUFNET] Tree/Woodlot Preservation during subdivision development

Hello fellow urban foresters,

I work as a forester in the planning department at the City of Ottawa. I review tree conservation reports submitted together with development applications and am always looking for feasible ways to retain trees/woodlots during development. I imagine that most cities also deal with similar grading issues in that new subdivisions require sometimes up to a few metres of fill, making any sort of tree retention quite challenging.

I have heard that some other jurisdictions are more progressive than Ottawa is when it comes to woodlot preservation during subdivision development. I am looking for some good examples whereby groups of trees, or small woodlots, have been retained during subdivision developments. Even feedback on the extent to which other jurisdictions are faced with this challenge on a regular basis would be very useful.

Thank you! Cheers,

Astrid
