[CANUFNET] Municipal climbing program in Edmonton

Hi Dan,

does Brian’s reply make you wish you had a provincial trade designation for arborists? Well you do. The job activity of arborists is already covered by the trade of Landscape Gardener in Alberta. Unfortunately, arborist instruction it has been so watered down over the years and the program is so general and voluntary, that this trade has lost track of the needs it was designed to serve. I am presently on two different provincial apprenticeship committees, hoping to rectify this problem by making the trade mandatory, and eventually splitting out the Arborist trade as a separate entity. The work is excruciatingly slow, as the main committee only meets once per year. We desperately need a municipal champion to move this agenda forward.

Are you interested in helping?

Drop me a line!

Warm regards,

Gerard

We have recently begun a new process whereby any new staff signing in to a Forestry position must be a trained arborist already or be willing to go through the provincial arborist trade program. This requires them to take 3 months off to go to college through the winter, 2 years consecutively. This allows us to provide a high level of training through a third party, at minimal cost to the City, as well as maintaining a high standard of education for the work force. We are currently developing this for Horticulture as well.

Hi,

My name is Dan Chouinard, Operations Supervisor for Forestry in the City of Edmonton. I have a question about municipal tree climbing programs.

I'm wondering if there are any examples of standard operating procedures, certification training programs (internal or external) or any other documentation or links you could provide related to your municipal Climbing program.

We currently considering the feasibility of a municipal climbing program in Edmonton.

Thanks,

Dan Chouinard
