Proceedings from the 2014 Trees People and the Built Environment II (TPBEII) Conference, the international urban tree research event, have been published, marking a milestone in the development of our urban forests and green infrastructure. Some of the key themes covered in the publication include the environmental, economic and social benefits of urban trees and woodland, featuring research and case studies from around the world.

The TPBEII publication contains papers from leading international academics in the fields of urban forestry, greenspace design and sustainability. These include Prof Roland Ennos, Professor of Biological Sciences at the University of Hull, Prof Herbert Girardet, Co-Founder of The World Future Council, and Dr. Kathleen Wolf, Research Social Scientist, University of Washington.

A sample of the topics covered in this publication are:

Creating Regenerative Cities (H Girardet)
Million Trees Los Angeles: Carbon Dioxide Sink or Source? (E G McPherson, A Kendall and S Albers)
Planting ‘Post-Conflict’ Landscapes: Urban Trees in Peacebuilding and Reconstruction (L D Shimada and M Johnston)
Invest From the Ground Up! The Benefits and Economics of City Trees and Greening (K L Wolf)
How Useful are Urban Trees? The Lessons of the Manchester Research Project (R Ennos, D Armson and M A Rahman)

Hosted by the Institute of Chartered Foresters (ICF) on behalf of the Conference Steering Group of over 20 partner organizations, TPBEII was a two-day urban trees event that took place 2-3 April 2014, at the University of Birmingham. The event attracted over 400 delegates, providing a forum for collaboration between the wide range of different sectors involved with greenspace design, construction and management.

The TPBEII proceedings have been published by the conference host, ICF. Green Infrastructure Planning and Governance in Europe

The GREEN SURGE project is a collaborative project between 24 partners in 11 countries. It is funded by the European Commission Seventh Framework Programme (FP7). Within the first project year of GREEN SURGE we studied the planning and governance of urban green space in Europe. In 2014, researchers collected data and interviewed city officials in 20 European cities and drafted a city portrait for each of these cities.

Breathe Easy: Urban Forests for Human Health
Webcast Replay Available
[http://img-ak.verticalresponse.com/media/d/3/6/d364414868/0681b10216/215a15c484/library/actrees.jpg]A webcast, presented by the Alliance for Community Trees (ACTrees), featuring Dr. David Nowak, US Forest Service, which outlined recent studies that yield powerful data linking healthy urban forests to lower human mortality rates.

Beyond traditional public health benefits, these findings show residents living in U.S. counties with better canopy coverage live longer—and healthier. As American cities continue to lose about 4 million trees annually, community groups are fueling new tree initiatives based on this research to set the ‘Greenprint’ for sustainable, livable communities.

This new research out of the Northern Research Station of the USDA Forest service shows clear links between greater canopy coverage forests and improved air quality. For the residents living near these trees, this leads to lower mortality rates and better overall health.

Two PhD opportunities in Urban Trees and Ecohydrology - University of Melbourne - DEADLINE JULY 31, 2015

2 x PhD projects: Ecohydrology of Trees in the Urban Landscape

University of Melbourne

Location: Burnley campus, Melbourne, Victoria

Salary etc: Two PhD projects with $7k top up scholarships (equivalent to $32.9k per annum)

We are seeking two highly motivated PhD students for a new ARC Industry Linkage project to be conducted at the Burnley campus and in the Western suburbs of Melbourne. This project will improve urban stormwater management by identifying suitable tree species for ‘water sensitive urban design’ systems based on their tolerance of drought and flexible capacity for high water use and nutrient uptake. The project relies on strong industry and government collaboration and is supported by the flagship ‘Greening the West’ program. Project partners include Melbourne Water, City West Water and the Nursery and Garden Industry Australia. The research program that these students will contribute to seeks to establish the drought resilience as well as the water and nutrient uptake capacity of a wide range of current and potential urban street trees. The ecohydrological properties and thresholds that these students determine will then be used to model the potential runoff water quality improvements that different tree species and WSUD installations can provide under existing and future rainfall and nutrient load scenarios. We are looking for highly motivated graduate students with strong academic records. You will have completed a four-year undergraduate degree or Masters degree (H1). Other research experience, publications and relevant will be considered favourably. Please submit an Expression of Interest (deadline 31 July 2015). Please send your Expressions of Interest by email to sjlive at unimelb.edu.au<mailto:sjlive at unimelb.edu.au> including: a one page letter of research motivation, a curriculum vitae most recent degree transcripts Selected students will then be encouraged to apply for a Melbourne Postgraduate Scholarship (APA. MRS or IPRS) through The University of Melbourne. The PhD projects will run for 3 years with full operational funding support, commencing January 2016. Expression of Interest deadline is Friday 31 July 2015.
