[CANUFNET] Memorial trees and plaques

Hi Ian. Hello all.

We are still using memorial planting plaques in Brampton Parks. Do to vandalism, the plaques are installed below grade and fortified with the concrete. Regarding maintenance, the plaques are sometimes covered in mulch, and may sometimes appear untidy. The locations are ultimately selected by city staff, who have a familiarity with the area(so as to avoid/reduce the vandalism/theft issues). If the plaques are vandalised or stolen we(City of Brampton) are replacing them.
When instillation efforts were modified and fortified the issue was reduced to a tolerable level. The metal cannot be legally recycled also reducing potential for theft. (They would have to be melted down first.)
Our Memorial planting Plaques process can be further reviewed on our portal at the city of Brampton. Program is administered by our cemetery group.

Hope this is helpful,
John.

Hi Ian,

I've attached a copy of our Council Policy regarding memorial planting and plaques. It reflects your policy in that we do not allow plaques except at the cemetery. The issue is damage and replacement costs of plaques.

We charge the full cost for the tree and planting when we plant memorial trees. The cost can vary but would be in the range of $600.00.

We also have a river valley authority that will do memorial tree planting and I've attached a link to their program with further info/details:

Hello
I'm interested in hearing from others who have a memorial/donated tree program with plaques.

In Kelowna, we allow citizens to donate trees for planting in parks, but we don't allow them to have a plaque except at the Cemetery. There's a few reasons for this, such as maintenance concerns and vandalism. We had a bad experience 15 years ago where some trees with plaques seemed to be a magnet for vandalism, so we stopped offering this.

Do you have a tree donation program? Do you allow plaques next to donated trees? How much to do charge?

thanks
