Hi Jim,
Interesting program- is the workshop offered through an in-class or online platform? Both?

Good Morning Chelsea
In Carleton Place population 11,000 near Ottawa we have had a tree planting program for residents since 1998. Every year we think it will be the last but with 3000 units going into the municipality we better expand the program.
With allot of the better planting sites being on private property the program was developed to enhance the Forest Canopy in the town.
This is how it works:
1. The residents pay $20 for a large barefoot tree. We find if they pay something into it they take care of it.
2. 6 native species are available each year some larger species such as sugar maple and some smaller such as service berry.
3. They must go through a workshop which covers
- what is required before picking up the tree - dig the hole
- how to pick up the tree and keep the roots moist
- how to plant the tree properly
- most important how maintain the tree
4. We maintain a list each year where the tree is planted
5. Once you have been through the workshop you do not need to come again if you order a tree. We do get allot of repeats coming back for more advise.
6. We have done informal drive arounds to look at trees that have been planted over the years and have seen very little mortality. I would say we are running at 90%

Good Afternoon,
Looking to see what other municipalities throughout Canada, both big and small, are doing in respect to promoting Tree Planting amongst their residents.
Do you offer a rebate for planted trees?
Do you sell trees directly to the residents? If so, are these trees planted and monitored by municipal staff?
Other options for urban tree planting programs?
Looking forward to seeing what other municipalities are doing to promote growth within their respective urban forest.
Cheers,
Chelsea Baird
