[CANUFNET] tearing up pavement or concrete to plant trees?

I suppose in a perfect world where funding is limitless, these measures can be met. However, with this particular project and budget, we were able to fill each pit with structural soil and cover the surface with cobblestone set in a porous subbase. While we typically install over 4000 street and park trees per year, this project was rewarding given the nature of the original site conditions.

Hi Rob:

The most critical thing is to not just digging out a large pit (hopefully not deeper than the height of the root ball and that the trunk flare is visible) but that the ability of roots to grow out of the planting space is accommodated. This is the most easily accomplished by replacing the existing substrate with a structural soil, covered with either dry set or permeable / porous pavers and that root paths or soil trenches be installed so that trees can connect with neighboring trees, thus further expanding the accessible volume of bootable soil.

Kind regards
Naomi

Hi Grace,

We recently teamed up with our Engineering Department to beautify an area that was devoid of any street trees. We removed concrete panels, dug out large pits and installed 40 street trees on both boulevards of a section of road. Additionally, rather than installing standard metal tree grates, we installed cobblestones around the base to provide a hard surface area while maintaining a decorative theme. We prefer to use cobblestones in selective areas to allow for the expansion of the root flare. Please contact me for more information.

Does anyone know of cities or communities that have torn up pavement or concrete, in order to plant more trees where they are needed?

I'd appreciate any links to articles or information.

Thanks,
Grace
