[CANUFNET] Tree Age

Homeowners love to ask “How old do you think that tree is ?”.
Standard answer is “I can cut it down and tell you, but I prefer not to.”

I like to give a range rather than a specific number: 50 to 75 years, or
"it’s at least 50." Much of what I gather, Mark, is from looking at tree stumps
of the same species. Like others I agree that age is not a huge factor in caring
for the tree. On the other hand, I do think its important to know the average 
and maximum lifespan of a particular species to determine
it’s appropriateness to the location that it’s in.  For maximum age you
might have a maple (Acer) at 300, or birch (Betula) at 60.
Site by site, case by case, tree by tree. It’s a great field to be in.
