[CANUFNET] Tree compensation

At the Town, we are in the midst of developing a bylaw precisely for this however for urban or right of way trees.  I would argue woodlot trees usually have a lower value due to superadaquacy. Caliper replacement is not realistic.

So, what we are drafting, and this has not gone to the AG yet or passed through council, consequences for unauthorized removal will be based on 2 times the  aggregate caliper with overall condition used as depreciation. Tree value is $500 and based on 5cm (50mm) replacements.  For example, 100cm tree, good condition removed without authorization.  Value equals 100cm x 75% = 75cm x 2 to replace.150cm divided by 5cm is 30 new trees at $500 each.  $15k. There may need to be a maximum.

Woodlot trees would likely need a case by case basis, but is likely more complete cated based on many factors.

Looking for guidelines for compensation to be paid for cutting trees without a permit. How many trees should be planted to replace each tree? Only stumps remain.  What other details  (tree type, maturity, etc.) should be specified?



This is on ecological land donated to the municipality, a fast growing suburb of Ottawa in Quebec, where a developer on a neighbouring property ran trails and cut trees on the land.  We are a community group weighing in on the municipal decisions.
