On municipal trees, we charge $1,490.00 for any tree under 20cm DBH. This will plant another tree, 40mm B&B as well as the charge for care and maintenance for three year until established.,
Any tree over 20cm, we look at the Trunk Method of appraisal recognized through ISA International.
You can get an idea of the DBH from other trees in the area. Look for similar size trunk base and average out the DBH of those trees that have been removed. Take pictures now a ruler in the picture so sizes can be determined at a later date. The municipality may go in and remove the stumps before you can get a proper size determined.
You might also take the approach of the canopy. Work out the square meters of the canopy that has been lost and work it into a per square meter cost. You can then use the Trunk Method Appraisal for the cost of the amount of canopy lost. You may have to compare other areas and see what the size of trees would have been lost to match other similar areas. If this was a mature area, then the normal 3 to 1 will never cover the loss of the canopy cover.
Hope this helps, On Monday, November 29, 2021, 01:53:58 p.m. EST, Marie-Paule Godin via CANUFNET <canufnet at list.web.net> wrote:

Looking for guidelines for compensation to be paid for cutting trees without a permit. How many trees should be planted to replace each tree? Only stumps remain.  What other details  (tree type, maturity, etc.) should be specified?

This is on ecological land donated to the municipality, a fast growing suburb of Ottawa in Quebec, where a developer on a neighbouring property ran trails and cut trees on the land.  We are a community group weighing in on the municipal decisions.
