A National Teleforum: Social Enterprise and Affordable Housing


 


Following up the successful pre-congress workshop on social enterprise in
the affordable housing sector in Vancouver, CHRA is continuing the theme
with its next national teleforum. Join us from 1:00-2:30 ET on April 29 to
hear from two organizations that have recently launched social enterprise
initiatives. 

Stella Burry Community Services in St. John's, NL has become a leader in the
provision of supportive and affordable housing housing, and recently
branched out to open Stella's Cafe. Stella's Cafe is a social enterprise
that will offer needed employment training for clients, and will add a new
revenue stream to the organization. Deborah Glassman will describe how
Stella's made the leap from housing provider to social entrepreneur, will
talk about the process of setting up the cafe, and will tell us what
expectations they have for the cafe and how they are working to realize
them.

The Edmonton Social Enterprise Fund has also just opened its doors. The fund
will support a range of social enterprises, but has identified affordable
housing as a priority area for its work. Omar Yaqub will describe the Fund's
mandate, origins, and how it hopes to support the affordable housing sector
to realize its entrepreneurial potential.
