Please circulate this invitation. Thanks.

Mad About the Arts would like to invite you to our annual Film Evening and
Reception at the Library and Archives Canada on Saturday, May 10, 2008 at 7
p.m. In collaboration with the Canadian Film Institute, MAA will be
presenting the film ‘Beautiful Dreamers’.

When Dr. Maurice Bucke (Colm Feore), superintendent of the London Asylum for
the Insane in London, Ontario, meets poet Walt Whitman (Rip Torn), his life
and that of his wife and patients are radically changed. Based on true
events, this 1880s-set dramatic distillation of Walt Whitman's poetry and
way of life centres around his friendship with Dr. Maurice Bucke, whose
opposition to the accepted medical practices of the day - electroshock,
corporal punishment, physical constraints - attracted Whitman's support.

In addition to the film, we have the privilege of hearing from Ottawa
author, Nadine McInnis, who will do a poetry reading on the theme of mental
illness from her latest book, Two Hemispheres. There will also be a silent
auction fundraiser for Open Minds, an anti-stigma program based in Ottawa
high schools.

Mad About the Arts is a coalition of Ottawa-based mental health agencies,
consumers, arts organizations, and interested community and corporate
members that organize or sponsor art and cultural events with the aim to:

* Increase public awareness about mental health

* Reduce the stigma associated with mental illness

Please plan to attend this exciting event and please circulate the attached
flyer among your family, friends and colleagues. We look forward to seeing
you there!
