Celebrating the International Day of Persons with Disabilities

Today (December 3) is the <http://everycanadiancounts.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=18083bcbde2e098af4ff643de&id=107ad341c1&e=0ef8ee4f83> International Day of Persons with Disabilities. Started in 1992 by the United Nations, this day is meant to raise awareness about disability issues as well as the benefits of ensuring all people, regardless of their abilities, are included in every part of society. This year’s theme is “Sustainable Development: The promise of technology” and highlights the need to make sure new technology is accessible to individuals living with disabilities so they can fully participate in the digital and online world.

Every Canadian Counts fully supports full inclusion of those living with disabilities in the political, social, and cultural opportunities in Canada. However, we recognize that in order to fully participate many individuals with disabilities require supports. These supports could include adaptive technologies such as screen readers, assistive devices like wheelchairs, supported living arrangements, or professional services such as speech therapy. It is our goal to ensure every Canadian with a long-term disability who needs such essential supports to participate in daily life can have access to them.

On this International Day of Persons with Disabilities help us make every Canadian count: encourage your friends, family, and coworkers to sign up as ECC supporters at <http://everycanadiancounts.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=18083bcbde2e098af4ff643de&id=696867c3d8&e=0ef8ee4f83> www.everycanadiancounts.com.

We’re Coming to a City Near You!

Our working group has been on the road during Fall 2014 spreading the word about Every Canadian Counts in Ontario. We’ve had the pleasure of meeting with individuals living with disabilities, caregivers, service providers, and concerned citizens in a number of cities including Ottawa, Toronto, Brampton, Kitchener, Woodstock, and Sarnia. Thank you to all those who came out to listen, ask questions, and share stories!

Our tour continues in January 2015. Building Momentum

Every Canadian Counts (ECC) is generating a lot of excitement among Canadians and politicians. Following a submission to the Liberal Party of Ontario from ECC, Premiere Kathleen Wynne issued a public assignment to the Minister of Community and Social Services (MCSS), Helena Jaczek, to “Seek support from the federal government where their action is required to help transform the social assistance system, including working together to provide services to vulnerable Ontarians”.

Since that time, ECC working group members have met with the Assistant Deputy Minister of MCSS, Karen Chan, to discuss the need for better research in Ontario on waiting list numbers, support needs, and spending as well as collaboration with the federal government to make new funding available to the disability supports system. It is our hope that the Ontario government will work together with the other Canadian provinces to get the federal government to commit to assisting with disability support programs across the country.
