Hello,

Join us on Thursday, November 24 at 10:30 a.m. for an update on what Ottawa’s Community Suicide Prevention Network is doing to prevent suicide among young people in our region.

Suicide is the second leading cause of death amongst youth aged 18-24; however, about 60% don’t seek help when they’re struggling with depression. This cohort experiences an increase in mental health issues, while facing a decrease in access to therapeutic services. The University of Ottawa’s Ian Colman will speak about factors associated with suicide among this age group.

Mario Cappelli of CHEO and Jacqueline Willmore of Ottawa Public Health will share the Network’s newest publication, an infographic that shows the state of suicide among young people, including stats about students in local high schools.

Purnima Sundar of the Centre of Excellence for Child and Youth Mental Health will share evidence about what works to prevent suicide among youth, followed by a presentation by youth who have participated in an international peer-support program to prevent suicide, Sources of Strength, who will explain why this program is uniquely successful.

All are welcome to bring an organizational banner to display. People who bring a banner should arrive at 10:00.

About the Community Suicide Prevention Network (CSPN)
Ottawa’s CSPN includes more than 50 organizations, brought together in 2010 by a growing concern about youth suicide and a desire to provide hope and help for youth who are at risk. The Royal, Youth Services Bureau, CHEO, Ottawa Public Health, Canadian Mental Health Association, and Ottawa Police Services are key partners among other organizations that work with children and youth in Ottawa.
