Welcoming Newcomers to the Maritimes: A Training Program for Rural Communities & Smaller Centres
Tues 1 pm June 27 - Thurs. June 29th 4 pm
Tatamagouche Centre, Tatamagouche Nova Scotia
Governments, businesses and community groups and faith-based organizations all point to the benefits and attributes to be attained in attracting and retaining immigrants and refugees to rural communities and smaller centres. This workshop explores the skills required to attract and retain newcomers, it provides training on cross-cultural competency, and will assist you in drawing up plans and proposals for making your community a welcoming one. This program is well suited for Regional Development Authorities, business groups, church and faith-based sponsorship organizations, community and social service providers from smaller centres and rural areas. This special program is offered in coordination with the Metropolitan Immigrant Settlement Association (MISA) of Halifax.

Leadership: Mohamed Yaffa since 2001 has been working with MISA bridging the cultural gap between the newcomer and the host community. His work has involved helping newcomer families in their settlement process and providing educational workshops on adaptation to life in Canada. He has also worked with Canadian service providers involved providing cross-cultural training, raising awareness about newcomers' experiences, encouraging and advocating for inclusive and responsive polices and services and engaging in partnerships to build a welcoming community. Evelyn Jones is the Community Capacity-Building Program Coordinator at MISA. She works with communities and organizations that wish to receive and settle newcomers. Evelyn organizes welcoming events and delivers trainings on reception and settlement. Previous to working with MISA, she worked for the YMCA Newcomers Centre. She has also lived and worked in Colombia and El Salvador in the area of human rights, international development, and education. Evelyn lives in the rural community of Kennetcook on an organic farm.

Cost: $300 (includes meals, accomodation and tuition). To register call 1-800-218-2220 or email: tatacent at tatacentre.ca.
