Last week, NDP Environment Critic, Graham Steele introduced legislation to
ban uranium mining in Nova Scotia. According to Mr. Steele, "The most
important reason for legislating the ban is that the principal use for
uranium is in nuclear power plants and nuclear weapons."

If he hasn't already done so, Mr. Steele should also introduce legislation
to ban coal mining in Nova Scotia -- burning coal releases radionuclides
[including uranium], mercury [a neurotoxin], sulphur [causing acid rain],
particulate matter, and carbon dioxide [the principal greenhouse gas].
Mining coal is also a source of methane, another greenhouse gas.
