Please help us to spread the news about LFP. Please
forward this to farmers, the media and friends in Atlantic Canada.
Thank you.

 FARMERS HARVEST
BENEFITS OF LOCAL FOODS PLUS

Farmers across the country are
signing up with Local Foods Plus, so they can display the highly sought and
widely recognized LFP sticker on their products that assures consumers they are
buying locally and sustainably produced foods.

Now Maritime farmers can also join in
on this massive marketing movement that is attracting the attention of consumers
throughout Canada.

Local Foods Plus is a Toronto based
non-profit company that is now officially certifying producers of local,
sustainable foods in all Canadian provinces. To be recognized by LFP the food
must be produced in local regions in a way that is gentle on the environment and
strict on worker and animal rights. In a word, it is ethical food. "We're
not just looking at where it comes from or simply the production system, either.
This is a broader package," said Local Food Plus vice-president Mike
Schreiner.

Since it launched last fall, Local Food
Plus has given its stamp of approval to 50 farmers and food processors.
The University of Toronto now buys 15 per cent of
its food from
LFP-certified farms, and many restaurants and grocery stores are following suit
as public demand grows.

A recent poll by Friends of the
Greenbelt Foundation in Ontario shows 91 per cent
of consumers would buy
locally grown food if they could find it in their grocery stores, and this rate
of demand can now be applied to most Canadian cities. "People will buy locally
grown food if it's convenient for them," said Schreiner.

Maritime farmers interested in learning
more about LFP certification are encouraged to contact The Institute for
Bioregional Studies at 902 367-0397 or email ibs_pei at yahoo.com.
