VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY
Position: Education Outreach and Engagement Volunteer
Organization: Sierra Club Canada - Atlantic Canada Chapter http://www.sierraclub.ca/atlantic
Location: Halifax, Nova Scotia
The Sierra Club Canada -- Atlantic Canada Chapter is a
non-profit environmental organization based out of Halifax,
NS. The mission of Sierra Club Canada is to focus
on five overriding threats: loss of animal and plant species;
deterioration of the planet's oceans and atmosphere; the
ever-growing presence of toxic chemicals in all living things;
destruction of our remaining wilderness; and spiraling
population growth and over consumption.
Since 2003, the Atlantic Canada Chapter has delivered
education programs in the Atlantic Provinces. The programs
are all hands-on, interactive and action-based.
For 2009/2010, our education program will focus on
sustainability and the Eco-Footprint. Through a joint high
school-elementary school mentorship program called
EcoBuddies, older students assume leadership roles and
deliver sustainability education to younger children.
We are currently looking for two (2) dedicated volunteers
to help with the coordination of the EcoBuddies program
in Nova Scotia. These volunteers will work out of the
Halifax office of the Sierra Club Canada.
Requirements:
- Demonstrated commitment to environmental sustainability
- Experience working with young people and in schools is an asset
- Must have strong communication skills (written and verbal)
- Willingness to engage in administrative work when required
- Willingness to commit 3-5 hours a week
Duties:
- Help with coordination of the EcoBuddies program
- Assist in delivery of Eco-Footprint presentations to grade 6 students
- Update and maintain the EcoBuddies website
- Seek out media opportunities
We are looking for outgoing, driven, and conscientious
volunteers. If you want to gain meaningful experience while
volunteering in a fun office environment then the Education
