Job Posting: Community Environmental Educator

 

JOB DESCRIPTION

The Ecology Action Centre (EAC) is a leading voice in Nova Scotia on
environmental issues. We work on environmental education and advocacy
and "action" is our middle name. We are looking for a returning student
to fill this exciting full-time summer position.

Overview:

The Community Environmental Educator will work with local community
groups and organizations to develop and deliver youth environmental
education programs that focus on issues connected to Halifax's North End
neighbourhood and daily life (e.g. local food pancake breakfast,
discovering nature in Needham Park, urban gardening). As part of these
programs participants will create two or more environmental murals. The
Community Environmental Educator will build a stronger sense of
community and solidarity between EAC and local groups, organizations and
families in our North End neighbourhood, provide rich learning
experiences for local youth, and leave a beautiful legacy in the form of
community-led, environmental murals. The position will report to EAC's
Internal Director and work closely with our Diversity Committee. 

 

Responsibilities:

*         foster connections with local summer youth programs and
schools

*         develop and deliver relevant environmental education programs
that focus on environmental education that is connected to the
neighbourhood and daily life (e.g. local food pancake breakfast,
discovering nature in Needham Park, urban gardening)

*         work with community centres and schools to choose mural sites

*         work with local artist(s) to incorporate mural development
into the environmental education programs

*         organize the creation of these murals, including
environmentally appropriate materials, scheduling, safety of
participants, etc.

*         ensure genuine connections are made between the groups
involved

*         support the overall work of the EAC

 

Skills and Experience

*         Previous experience working with youth 

*         Proven ability to work with diverse groups and individuals

*         Sound knowledge of environmental issues

*         Experience in community development

*         Proven ability to develop programs or curriculum

*         Effective at building relationships and connections

*         Ability to work independently

*         Organized, with good judgment and a sense of humour

*         Interest in the visual arts would be ideal

*         Experience with non-profits preferred

Duration: 3 June to 26 August, 2010

Wage: $13.25 per hour for 35 hours per week

 

Location: Halifax, Nova Scotia
