EXPLORING WAYS TO GROW: ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY AND DEVELOPMENT CAN CO-EXIST The free public talk will be held at 7:00 pm on Monday, November 15 in the auditorium of the Dalhousie School of Planning (across from the Spring Garden Road library. The Ecology Action Centre is bringing two prominent environmentalists to Halifax - Bruce Lourie, author of Slow Death by Rubber Duck, and David Donnelly, environmental lawyer and former Executive Director of the Environmental Defence Fund for the lecture.

GHOST BIRD MOVIE SCREENING
Ghost Bird is a documentary film about the reported re-discovery of the Ivory-billed Woodpecker - a bird thought to be extinct. Learn more about this award-winning film at www.ghostbirdmovie.com. "VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN: THE DEVASTATING LEGACY AND THE TRANSFORMING STRUGGLE." 
November 17, 2010 at Acadia University
Acadia University will host internationally-renowned expert on gender and violence, Professor Gill Hague, who will be give a talk entitled The presentation is set for Wednesday, November 17 from 1-2:30 p.m. in the Beveridge Arts Centre, Room 138. This public lecture will discuss, in an accessible way, the tragedy of violence against women across the world, and the transforming efforts to campaign against it and to build policy, practice and activism.  It includes a brief discussion of the work of the Centre for Gender and Violence Research at the University of Bristol, UK, one of the largest such centres, which works nationally and internationally, using an activist frame wherever possible. The lecture will be a broad-brush 'global' coverage of violence against women, and various versions of it have already been presented in three continents.  Prof. Hague will illustrate the talk with examples both from the work of activists internationally and from her own contributions over nearly 40 years, as a women's movement activist and a researcher in many countries of the world.  This often-distressing work feeds into the transformative and moving struggle to make violence against women a thing of the past. The lecture will end on an uplifting note to celebrate the historic achievements of this struggle so far. The following morning on Wednesday, November 18, Prof. Hague will be available for a "Coffee Klatch" from 9-10 a.m. in the Garden Room at the K. C. Irving Centre. This will be an informal social gathering where people will have a chance to ask questions and talk about her work.

The relationship between cancer risk and handheld cellular telephone use is the subject of several recent national and international epidemiological studies. Abstract:
Canada's Oceans Act recognizes the importance of information for managing the country's coastal and ocean areas. Section 33 of the Act states that the Minister of Fisheries and Oceans is required to "gather, compile, analyse, coordinate and disseminate information". Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) has identified state of the environment (SOE) reporting as a tool to assist in fulfilling this obligation under the Act. The development of a state of the oceans reporting system is identified in Canada's Ocean Strategy (DFO 2002) as part of the policy objective to understand and protect the marine environment.  This presentation will provide an overview of state of the environment reporting for coastal and ocean management internationally and nationally, and the approach that is being taken in the Maritimes by Fisheries and Oceans Canada.

•	Debert Bunker: By Invitation Only, a documentary video by Liz MacDougal. Liz has recently re-mastered this video telling the background story of the day-long women’s peace protest at the gates of the Debert military base on February 29, 1984. Discussion to follow with Janet Maybee, one of the participants.
•	A presentation and discussion led by Nancy Covington on the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty Review Conference held this year in New York. The Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty is a treaty to limit the spread of nuclear weapons that came into force on 5 March 1970, and currently there are 189 states party to the treaty. It is reviewed every five years in meetings called Review Conferences of the Parties to the Treaty of Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons. Nancy (and Alexa) attended these meetings and can report on the conclusions and recommendations.
•	A report  and discussion led by Alexa McDonough on the Peace Conference -Being the Change: Building a Culture of Peace, which was held July 7 - 10, 2010 at Mount Saint Vincent University. The conference included a field trip to Pugwash, World Famous for Peace. NS VOW was one of the sponsors of the conference as our celebration of the 50th anniversary of VOW.
•	 Janet Maybee & Claudia Schibler will lead a discussion of VOW support for Veteran’s Issues 
•	The Raging Grannies and Sandy Greenberg will lead us in song

BOOK LAUNCH: SANCTUARY: THE STORY OF NATURALIST MARY MAJKA Biographer Deborah Carr will be speaking in Halifax at the Museum of Natural History (1747 Summer Street) on Wednesday, November 17, 2010 at 7:30 pm. 
About the book: Mary Majka, a Polish-Canadian immigrant, survived personal tragedy and incarceration at a forced labour camp during World War II to become a pioneer in Canada’s environmental movement, an advocate for the protection of wildlife, and a proponent for heritage preservation. She hosted the children’s TV show ‘Have You Seen?’, started the first children’s nature centre in a national park, and fought to create the internationally acclaimed Mary’s Point Western Hemispheric Shorebird Reserve on the Bay of Fundy. Mary’s selfless actions have served as an example to others, inspiring them to excel in new directions. Here, perhaps, lies her greatest legacy and lesson: that our collective survival depends on caring for that which sustains us . . . not only our past and planet, but also our relationships with each other. Deborah will be discussing Mary Majka’s past, her importance to Canadian wildlife conservation, and the legacy she has created for all Canadians. Books will be available for purchase, and Deborah will be pleased to sign your copy.

SAY NO TO THE $16 BILLION JOINT STRIKE FIGHTER F35’s 
The federal government is rushing forward with a plan to buy 65 Lockheed Martin F-35 stealth fighter jets for $16 billion (cost overruns expected and more costs for maintenance and could reach $26 billion of Canadians’ tax dollars), for battles Canada is highly unlikely to ever fight. We don't need them for bombing missions. Sixteen billion dollars is a lot of money, and the federal government can't afford them as we are running a federal deficit, increasing our national debt and in the midst of a global economic recession. Canadians want their tax dollars spent on child care, education, healthcare, affordable housing and the environment.
