ABOUT NSPIRG

NSPIRG (the Nova Scotia Public Interest Research Group) is a non-profit, social and environmental justice research and resource center. We are located in Room 314 of the Student Union Building on Dalhousie University. NSPIRG's mandate is to empower, educate and inspire action on social justice issues in Nova Scotia. We are a student and volunteer-driven organization working within an anti-oppression framework. We engage in critical campaigns, public education, and offer radical resources to the campus and community.

JOB DESCRIPTION: OUTREACH and ADMINISTRATIVE COORDINATOR

The Outreach and Administrative Coordinator will work closely with the Resources and Administrative Coordinator, the NSPIRG Board of Directors, general volunteers and working group members to oversee the general operations of NSPIRG.

The ideal candidate would possess the following skills and experiences:

• Demonstrated commitment to, and understanding of the principles and practice of anti-oppression
• Demonstrated understanding of consensus based decision-making
• Involvement in organizing around issues of social and environmental justice and grassroots community-led initiatives
• Experience coordinating issue-based campaigns
• Demonstrated experience with event-planning and promotion
• Experience planning and facilitating workshops
• Experience with volunteer coordination
• Comfortable with engaging strangers
• Strong interpersonal skills
• Strong written and verbal communication skills
• Very good computer skills, including proficiency with web and design software, and good knowledge of social media
• Knowledge of non-profit organization administration
• Experience with grant or proposal writing

The following are assets, but not required:

• Familiarity with Halifax community organizations, student organizations and the university environment
• Some post-secondary education

RESPONSIBILITIES

An overall breakdown of the Outreach and Administrative Coordinator's responsibilities

30 % - Public Outreach
30 % - Supporting internal projects, working groups and campaigns
20 % - Board and organizational support
20 % - Office inquiries and administration

The following responsibilities are common and shared between the Outreach & Administrative Coordinator and the Resource and Administrative Coordinator:

• Ensure that all activities of NSPIRG are consistent with an anti-oppression mandate
• Maintaining regular office hours and general office management
• Fostering a welcoming atmosphere in the office space
• Monitor and respond to email, phone and in person correspondence
• Responsibility for 2 -- 3 (half) of the NSPIRG projects and working groups
• Recruiting coordinators (projects only)
• Support with goal setting and tracking,
• Volunteer recruitment,
• Initial and ongoing training including but not limited to consensus based decision making and anti-oppression

• Assist with regular and committee meetings of the Board and participate as appropriate and/or required
• Assist the Board in the coordination of strategic planning, general meetings, opt-out periods and hiring processes.
• Establishing and maintaining systems that support organizational learning and memory (e.g. archives, operating manuals, computer systems)

The following responsibilities are to be fulfilled by the Outreach and Administrative Coordinator:

• Develop an outreach and communications strategy to increase volunteer capacity and to publicize the work of NSPIRG researchers, working groups, projects and campaigns
• Create and strengthen relationships and partnerships with organizations throughout Halifax
• Event logistics (room booking, AV set-up)
• Send out regular community newsletter and maintain NSPIRG's Facebook, twitter (etc.) where appropriate
• Manage the NSPIRG website and project subdomains, as well as all mailing lists and email setup
• Keeping a history of programming and projects that will be included in the annual report
• Writing the annual report
• Annual renewal of Joint Stocks membership
• Grant applications (except financial information)

WAGE
This is a unionized position with SEIU local 2, 28 hours weekly/ $17 per hour
