"THE RIGHT TO A HEALTHY ENVIRONMENT: REVITALIZING CANADA'S CONSTITUTION"
David Boyd, Author and Environmental Lawyer
Monday, November 5
Room 105
Schulich School of Law,
Dalhousie University,
6061 University Avenue, Halifax
Reception to follow

David Boyd, author and environmental lawyer, will present his new book, "The
Right to a Healthy Environment: Revitalizing Canada's Constitution." Boyd
describes how recognizing the constitutional right to a healthy environment
could have a transformative impact, empowering citizens, holding governments
and industry accountable, and improving Canada's green record. The
overwhelming majority of the world's nations now recognize the right to a
healthy environment through laws, constitutions, treaties, or court
decisions. Boyd explores Canada's history of failed efforts to do the same
within this international context and evaluates three pathways to
constitutional recognition of the right to a healthy environment. The Right
to a Healthy Environment makes the case that constitutional recognition of
environmental rights and responsibilities would both reflect and reinforce
Canadian values, much as the Charter of Rights and Freedoms confirmed and
enhanced our commitment to equality. This important, provocative book
provides a blueprint renewed leadership in protecting human health, the
well-being of the planet, and the interests of future generations.

David R. Boyd is one of Canada's leading environmental lawyers, an adjunct
professor at Simon Fraser University, and an adviser on environmental policy
to governments in Canada and Sweden. He is also an international expert on
human rights and the environment, assisting countries from Iceland to
Tunisia in securing constitutional protection for the right to a healthy
environment.

Books will be available for sale at both events. Organized by the East Coast
Environmental Law Association, the Nova Scotia Environmental Law & Policy
Caucus, Ecojustice, David Suzuki Foundation, Environmental Law Student
Society, Marine & Environmental Law Institute at Dalhousie University, and
the Environment & Sustainability Studies at Acadia University. More

¡°THE UGLY CANADIAN: STEPHEN HARPER'S FOREIGN POLICY¡± BOOK LAUNCH
Author and activist, Yves Engler
Thursday, November 15
Sobey 4th floor
Sobey Building, 903 Robie St.
Saint Mary's University, Halifax
Free public events with author Yves Engler. He will speak on his new book
"The Ugly Canadian: Stephen Harper's Foreign Policy". The book documents
the sordid story of the Canadian government¡¯s sabotage of international
environmental efforts, a government totally committed to tar sands producers
and a mining industry widely criticized for abuses. Furthermore, this
sweeping critique details Harper¡¯s opposition to the ¡°Arab Spring¡±
democracy movement and his backing of repressive Middle East monarchies, as
well as his support for a military coup in Honduras and indifference to
suffering of Haitians following the earthquake that devastated their
country. The book explores Canada¡¯s extensive military campaign in Libya,
opposition to social transformation in Latin America and support for a
right-wing Israeli government. With an eye to Canada¡¯s growing
international isolation, The Ugly Canadian is a must read for those who
would like to see Canada adopt a more just foreign policy. Engler is a Montr
¨¦al-based activist and author. His other books include "Cars and
Capitalism on the Road to Economic, Social and Ecological Decay" (with
Bianca Mugyenyi) and "The Black Book of Canadian Foreign Policy."

Books will be available for sale. Organized by International Development
Studies, Saint Mary's University, the Council of Canadians, Canadians for

HAITI¡¯S NEW DICTATORSHIP: THE COUP, THE EARTHQUAKE & THE UN OCCUPATION
Book launch with author Justin Podhur
Thursday, November 22
7:30-9:00 p.m.
KTS lecture hall,
New Academic Building
University of King's College
6350 Coburg Rd., Halifax

In 1804 Haiti became the world's first independent black Republic following
a slave revolution. 200 years later, ravaged by colonialism and violence, it
was placed under UN military occupation. Haiti's New Dictatorship charts the
country's recent history, from the 2004 coup against President Aristide to
the devastating 2010 earthquake, revealing a shocking story of abuse and
indifference by international forces. Justin Podur unmasks the grim reality
of a supposedly benign international occupation, arguing that the denial of
sovereignty is the fundamental cause of Haiti's problems. A powerful
challenge and wake-up call to the international NGO and development
community, Haiti's New Dictatorship is essential reading for anyone
concerned with justice in the global south and progressive development
policies.

About The Author
Justin Podur is Associate Professor of Environmental Studies at York
University, Canada. He is a writer on political conflicts and social
movements, and has reported from numerous countries including the Democratic
Republic of the Congo, Pakistan, Haiti and Israel/Palestine. He is a
contributor to Empire's Ally: Canadian Foreign Policy and the War in
Afghanistan (2012).

HAITI¡¯S NEW DICTATORSHIP: THE COUP, THE EARTHQUAKE & THE UN OCCUPATION
Book launch with author Justin Podhur
Friday, November 23
12:00-1:30 p.m.
Room 127, McNally Main Building,
St. Mary's University, 923 Robie St., Halifax

A powerful
challenge and wake-up call to the international NGO and development
community, Haiti's New Dictatorship is essential reading for anyone
concerned with justice in the global south and progressive development
policies.
