ABOUT THE NOVA SCOTIA PUBLIC INTEREST RESEARCH GROUP

The Nova Scotia Public Interest Research Group (NSPIRG) is a non-profit, social and environmental justice research and resource centre. We are located in Room 314 of the Student Union Building at Dalhousie University. NSPIRG’s mandate is to empower, educate and inspire action on social justice issues in Nova Scotia. We are a student and volunteer-driven organization working within an anti-oppression framework. We engage in critical campaigns, public education, and offer radical resources to the campus and community.

JOB DESCRIPTION
OUTREACH and ADMINISTRATIVE COORDINATOR

The Outreach and Administrative Coordinator will work closely with the Resource and Administrative Coordinator, the NSPIRG Board of Directors, volunteers and working group members to oversee the general operations of NSPIRG.

The Ideal Candidate would possess the following skills and experiences:
• a demonstrated commitment to, and understanding of the principles and practice of anti-oppression
• a demonstrated understanding of consensus based decision-making
• involvement in organizing around issues of social and environmental justice and grassroots community-led initiatives
• experience with volunteer coordination
• experience planning and facilitating workshops, events, and issue-based campaigns
• demonstrated experience with event-planning and promotion
• knowledge of non-profit organization administration
• experience with grant or proposal writing
• comfort using a computer to produce documents and send emails
• strong written and verbal communication skills
• strong interpersonal skills (e.g. comfort with engaging strangers)

The following skills are an asset but are not required:
• familiarity with Halifax community organizations, student organizations and the university environment an asset
• some post-secondary education
• experience with web and design software, social media platforms, and electronic outreach practices

Responsibilities

The following responsibilities are common and shared between the Outreach and Administrative Coordinator and the Resource and Administrative Coordinator:
• ensure that all activities of NSPIRG are consistent with an anti-oppression mandate
• maintaining a welcoming office space during office hours
• maintaining regular office hours and general office management
• responsibility for 2 – 3 (half) of the NSPIRG core projects: recruiting coordinators and liaising
• outreach for new working groups and liaising with them
• attend and report at Board of Directors meetings
• monitor and respond to email, phone and in person correspondence
• assist the Board in the coordination of board strategic planning, general meetings, opt-out periods and hiring processes
• The following responsibilities are to be fulfilled by the Outreach and Administrative Coordinator:
• grant applications (except financial information)
• annual renewal of Joint Stocks membership
• writing the annual report
• event logistics (room booking, AV set-up)
• send out weekly online community calendar and mailing list announcements
• manage website
• publicize the work of NSPIRG through making and distributing posters, flyers, media, etc.
• develop an outreach strategy to reach a wide range of community groups, campaigns, and organizations

WAGE

This is a unionized 1 year position with SEIU local 2, . 28 hours weekly at $17 per hour
