Position: Farm Coordinator
Organization: Open Sky Co-operative

Location: 5km from downtown Sackville, New Brunswick 
Dates: April – November 2021 (see below)

Open Sky Co-operative is a charitable organization, located on an 11-acre farm in Sackville NB, where adults who experience barriers due to disability or mental illness use activities of food, farming and gardening to build skills that improve independence and opportunities. The facility includes about 1 acre of market garden, 2 greenhouses, a small apple orchard, hen house, and barn. Open Sky is located 5km from downtown Sackville.

The role of the Farm Coordinator is to plan, develop and maintain the farm and gardens for the benefit of Open Sky programming, and also to train and supervise activities of Participants, Volunteers and Staff while they are working on the farm and gardens. Supervision of summer student staff is also a responsibility.

Our Farm Coordinator has education or certification in agriculture, environment, education or health, with additional training in first aid and/or mental health skills. Drivers license is required. At least 2 years experience in farming, animal husbandry and/or market gardening, as well as training or experience working with vulnerable populations (autism, mental healthy, developmental challenges) would be ideal.

Skills sets include sustainable gardening and farming of fruits and vegetables; animal care (hens, goats, donkeys); working with others who have unique learning styles; conveying information, skills and encouragement regarding farm tasks; supervising others for safety and coaching; working within a budget; working in a team environment with other managers; and, doing some report writing.

Personal characteristics include patience, adaptability, behaving ethically, good interpersonal skills, communication skills, innovative thinking, fostering teamwork, good and timely decision-making, and problem-solving. Being a trusting personal presence, and making others feel respected and safe, are priority.

Training will be provided in Mental Health First Aid, Structured Learning Practices for Autism, and updated First Aid Certification, if needed.

The Farm Coordinator is a seasonal position, and includes 1 planning day in February (meet with other Managers, order seeds etc), then 20 hours per week during April, 35 hours per week for 28 weeks, then seasonal lay-off in mid-November. The Farm Coordinator works weekdays, with all weekends and Statutory Holidays off.
