Position: Manager of External Relations
Organization: Clean Foundation
Location: Dartmouth/Halifax, Nova Scotia

Position Overview: The Manager of External Relations oversees external communications for the Clean Foundation, supports strategic stakeholder management, takes the lead on public relations and media relations, and supports program staff in their communications and social marketing initiatives.

This role will often be the public face of Clean to the general public and must be professional, trustworthy and knowledgeable. Exhibiting good judgment that elevates Clean’s public standing is paramount. This role is a key resource for Clean’s program staff and will work closely with program teams on a variety of projects.

The successful candidate will be able to balance multiple tasks and provide timely strategic advice and deliver quality work under tight deadlines. Additional hours, or time outside of normal work hours, may be required in order to meet operational requirements of planning and delivering specific projects at specific times of the year.

Key Areas of Responsibility: 
• Developing and executing an annual organizational communications plan for Clean.
• Creating and overseeing communications and related budgets.
• Working with program teams to support the development of program communication plans.
• Supporting Clean program managers in creating and implementing their communication plans.
• Identifying and following through on opportunities to raise the profile of Clean’s work through events and other activities, particularly the placement of news and stories in regional and regional media, web and other outlets.
• Overseeing internal Clean communications staff.
• Responding to communication requests and providing accurate and timely information to the public, media, and external stakeholders (including governments, First Nations, and civil society organizations).
• Procuring and overseeing freelance communications professionals who develop products for Clean (including writing, audio-visual, and web/mobile), and ensuring high-quality results.
• Supporting the Clean administrative and IT teams in developing and maintaining effective stakeholder relations management systems and processes.
• Media monitoring and analysis and preparation of briefing materials for the Management team and Board of Directors as required.
• Developing and maintaining communication tools, templates and procedures for Clean program staff.
• Overseeing the management of Clean’s various web, mobile and social media platforms to ensure timely, relevant information, approving/editing program-generated content, regularly tracking web statistics and analytics, developing and managing a content plan for the website, and liaising with stakeholders, including staff and volunteers to coordinate content development.

Education and Required Qualifications: 
• Degree in Communications, Marketing, Public Relations or related field, or relevant experience.
• Minimum of seven [7] years’ experience in the communications, external affairs, public relations and/or marketing fields.
• Demonstrated experience and success working in a high pressure, deadline-driven environment providing services to multiple internal clients.
• Experience in stakeholder relations and/or customer relations management.
• Must have exceptional presentation, interpretation, and communication skills - written and verbal.
• Must be adept in the use of social media platforms to communicate key messages and reach key stakeholder groups.
• Must have excellent judgement and be capable of communicating and receiving messages with depth and nuance.
• Must be adept in media skills across a variety of platforms, including TV, newspaper, radio.
• Must have experience in working on social or environmental issues.
• Must be proficient with computer applications such as MS Office Suite.
• Must have strong project management and organizational skills.
• Must demonstrate a passion for the environment.
• Must have valid Canadian driver’s license and be able to provide a Driver’s Abstract from the Registry of Motor Vehicles.
• Must be legally entitled to work in Canada.
• Must be able to complete and pass a criminal background check.
• Experience working with customer relations management software is considered an asset.
• Experience working in a non-profit organization is considered an asset.
• Experience working with Indigenous organizations is considered an asset.
• Experience creating video and audio content is an asset.
• Experience in graphic design is considered an asset.
• Speaking French is considered an asset.
