ABOUT US

The Ecology Action Centre is an environmental charity based in Nova Scotia. We work to catalyze change through policy advocacy, community development, and building awareness.

The Ecology Action Centre (EAC) has a long history of food work that spans Nova Scotia as well as connecting with national efforts. Since 2014, EAC has played a pivotal role in co-developing the Halifax Food Policy Alliance (HFPA) - a partnership working to build a healthy, just and sustainable food system for the Halifax Region. Currently, the HFPA is working with the Halifax Regional Municipality to develop a food action plan for the Halifax Region.

ABOUT YOU

As a Community Food Coordinator you are eager to use your knowledge of community food security as well as apply a strategic and collaborative lens on regional food system development. You have an aptitude to develop partnerships, learn from the grassroots and collate information generated across community, government and business sector into a coordinated approach around food policy development.

YOUR FOCUS

You will work to support and expand EAC’s food work, ensuring strong connections to diverse food system stakeholders and linking food policy and action to EAC’s organizational campaigns. In 2021/22, the development of a Food Action Plan for the Halifax Region, in partnership with HFPA and the Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM), will be your primary focus. The food action plan aims to coordinate and maximize efforts of diverse food actors from across government, business and community sectors in helping to achieve our vision and make progress towards measurable goals. Key elements of this work will include implementation of a comprehensive engagement plan, collection and analysis of data, research and report writing, as well as applying a strategic and collaborative lens on regional food system development.

WHAT YOU WILL BRING
• Sound knowledge of community food security, constructive engagement principles, and community development approaches;
• Project management skills that will connect people and projects across the HFPA Steering Committee and Task Teams to ensure clear communication and strong coordination;
• At least 3 years’ experience in project management;
• Commitment to environmental issues and social justice;
• An ability to gather and analyze the most critical information needed to understand problems and offer reasonable alternatives to resolve problems or make decisions.
• Demonstrated ability to work well within collaborative structures and coalitions and with diverse groups and supporting inclusion;
• Experience in community and public engagement including meeting and group facilitation and event planning;
• Ability to research, analyze data, write reports and coordinate the implementation of the food action plan.
• Proactive approach to funding and grant writing initiatives in order to support the advancement of the Food Action plan and other food related initiatives that are important for EAC;

This is a full time position, 37.5 hours a week (Mon-Fri) for one year, with possibility of extension based on funding. Starting wage of $22.44 per hour.
