Before taking office, Justin Trudeau assured voters he would not purchase the F-35 fighter jet. Now the Liberals look set to break their promise and purchase 88 of these dangerous, climate-destroying warplanes for $19 billion, it’s the second most expensive procurement in Canadian history.
Hear from Capt. Dan Grazier (ret.), defense expert & the Jack Shanahan Military Fellow with the U.S. based Project on Government Oversight (POGO), about the highly flawed F-35 stealth fighter jet program. Dan is a leading critic of the F-35 program in the US. He has written extensively about problems in U.S. military procurement and with the F-35. He has appeared before congressional hearings to discuss concerns related to defense contracting especially with Lockheed Martin’s new stealth fighter fleet. He will discuss the history of the F-35 program, the prime contractor Lockheed Martin and how the problems we are currently dealing with were embedded at the program' inception. He will give an update on the program and raise concerns Canadians should consider in their decision about buying the F-35. POGO investigates & exposes waste, corruption and abuse of power in government especially in the U.S. Department of Defense. https://www.pogo.org/
Dan will be joined by Tamara Lorincz, researcher and member with the Women’s International League for Peace & Freedom (WILPF) Canada and author of a new report Soaring: The Harms and Risks of Fighter Jets and Why Canada Must Not Buy a New Fleet.
Moderated by Bianca Mugyenyi, Canadian Foreign Policy Institute.

Pre-Budget Consultations – Deadline Feb. 25
Fill out the survey here (it only takes 5 minutes): https://www.letstalkbudget2022.ca/let-s-talk-budget-2022

Copies of my answers to the open questions if you’d like to use any of it:
(A)
Reduce military spending and re-allocate it to urgent social and environmental needs. According to the Public Accounts of Canada 2021, federal spending on the Department of National Defence was $28.6 billion whereas the Department for Indigenous Services was only $4 billion, the Department of Environment and Climate was only $2 billion and the Department for Women and Gender Equality was only $51 million. Canada is spending too much on militarized security and supporting a male-dominated institution that deploys armed force and isn’t doing peacekeeping. Canada is ranked 69th in the world for peacekeeping with only 59 soldiers on UN peace support operations. Canada's military is involved in NATO operations that are causing instability and increasing conflict with other countries (for example in Afghanistan, Libya and Eastern Europe). Canada needs to demilitarize and cut military spending. We need greater federal investment in the things that really make us safe and secure our future like climate action, health care, education, Indigenous reconciliation and foreign aid (Canada hasn't ever met our 0.7% GDP target). These investments would help Canadians and people in developing countries, create more jobs at home and abroad, and stimulate the green care economy. See: https://www.tpsgc-pwgsc.gc.ca/recgen/cpc-pac/2021/vol2/s1/rcec-reet-eng.html
(B)
Cancel the $19 billion procurement for fighter jets (don’t purchase armed drones and warships) and cut military spending then invest that money in climate action, affordable housing (ending homelessness), education (ending student debt), health care (including dental care, mental health care, ending the opioid crisis) and Indigenous reconciliation (end Indigenous poverty). No to militarism and yes to mutual aid.
