Job Title: Communications Advisor
Organization: Ocean Tracking Network
Location: Halifax, Nova Scotia

Compensation: $55,000-65,000, 3 weeks’ vacation + winter holiday closure, cost-shared benefits plan with matching RRSP contribution.
Expected start date: May 3, 2022

The Ocean Tracking Network (OTN) is a rapidly growing international marine and freshwater monitoring platform that focuses on tracking the movements of aquatic animals in the context of ocean climate change. OTN is headquartered at Dalhousie University and has ties to international universities and research institutions.

POSITION SUMMARY:

Reporting to the Communications Manager, the Communications Advisor is an integral part of OTN’s communications team. The duties are diverse and multi-faceted; professionalism and a strategic mindset are vital for this role. This position regularly develops and supports strategic projects and campaigns in support of OTN’s overarching communications and organizational goals. Experience with media (social and traditional) is essential. It is imperative that the candidate works well under pressure and in a team environment, has strong attention to detail, and is able to self-motivate.

OTN is a dynamic work environment and, as such, responsibilities may vary from time to time. The Communications Advisor is based in Halifax. Occasional travel will be required, as well as availability at times to work evening and weekend hours.

This is a one-year contract with a strong likelihood for renewal through 2029.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: 
• Leading the development and execution of high-level multi-stakeholder events, campaigns and special projects;
• Leading the development of OTN’s social media plan, advising on strategy (audiences, content, tactics) and tracking progress against OTN’s overarching communications and organizational goals;
• Working closely with the OTN communications manager and senior management to create updated strategic documents that align with OTN’s changing long-term goals (communications plan, crisis communications plan, and other strategic planning documents);
• Developing communications and promotional materials (e.g. newsletters, news stories, fact sheets, event posters, and presentations, press releases, social media graphics, high-quality videos, etc.);
• Writing and distributing promotional materials for reporters and journalists, science bloggers, other researchers, social media influencers about the programs, research and activities of OTN;
• Producing and maintaining written and graphic content for the OTN websites, social media, and digital communications platforms to ensure websites and accounts are up to date and appear both professional and on-brand;
• Developing and advising on press requests, press conferences, and providing strategic advice and content for media/press; scanning for and collating media mentions, updating media contact lists as needed;
• Coordinating and liaising with OTN partners and stakeholders (Network members, external organizations, HQP) to ensure communication needs and goals are met;
• Advising on and advancing OTN’s virtual and hybrid meetings and use of cutting-edge platforms, developing and maintaining resources for staff and participants, and training users on associated platforms/software;
• Supervising co-ops, experiential learners and interns (typically one per term);
• Attending internal and external meetings in representation of the OTN communications team;
• Serving as delegate/stand-in for Communications Manager as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS: 
• Education:
• Bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing, marine biology, or a related field
• Advanced diploma in public relations or related certification is preferred
• Experience:
• Minimum of five years’ related experience in science communication, marketing, and/or outreach and engagement
• Specialized knowledge:
• High level of expertise conducting media relations (including liaising with reporters and journalists, crafting press releases and pitching stories to media outlets)
• Demonstrated skills in the development, design and distribution of high-quality communications materials
• High degree of proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (photo editing, graphic layout and design)
• Expert knowledge of digital and social media platforms and strategies (Twitter, Facebook, WordPress)
• Expert knowledge of social media and web analytics, including tracking, analyzing, reporting on results and maximizing performance
• Advanced understanding of communication methods, approaches, and techniques. Experience communicating marine and ocean research and technology to a wide variety of audiences, is an asset.
• In depth knowledge of local, national, and international political landscapes.
• Skills:
• Exceptional editorial insight, copy editing, and attention to detail
• Strong oral communication skills with a demonstrated fluency in English
• Exceptional written grammar and punctuation skills
• Solid time management and prioritization skills
• Demonstrated experience supervising, coaching and mentoring individuals of all backgrounds, ages, and technical abilities
• Strong project management experience
• Professional fluency in French would be an asset
• Abilities:
• Able to research, process, organize and present information interestingly and convincingly
• Able to work within tight and strict deadlines and respond to changing priorities
• Able to work both independently and collaboratively within a team environment
• Able to think creatively, problem solve, and develop innovative and engaging initiatives
• Able to travel within Canada and internationally, as required (typically 2-3 times per year).
• Able to work occasional evening and weekend hours, as required.
