*Each year, the Alliance hosts its annual Community Forum on or near
November 22 - to mark National Housing Day in Canada. Wondering what
National Housing Day is? Here's a brief overview, courtesy of the Homeless
Hub: *

In 1998, the homelessness advocacy group Toronto Disaster Relief Committee
(TDRC) declared homelessness to be a national disaster
<http://tdrc.net/index.php?page=state-of-emergency-declaration>. The State
of Emergency Declaration
<http://homelesshub.ca/resource/state-emergency-declaration-urgent-call-emergency-humanitarian-relief-prevention-measures>
was released in October 1998 and immediately endorsed by individuals,
community agencies, faith groups, labour unions and various governmental
entities. The campaign included the 1% solution
<http://tdrc.net/1-solution.html> which called for all levels of government
to invest additional funds, equally about 1% of their budgets, in building
social housing.

On October 28th 1998, Toronto City Council passed a motion
<http://www.toronto.ca/legdocs/1998/agendas/council/cc/cc981028/cn10rpt/cl001.htm>
endorsing the declaration. Two years later, the TDRC, the Church of the
Holy Trinity <http://www.holytrinitytoronto.org/wp/> and several concerned
activists launched Toronto’s Homeless Memorial to commemorate that date and
to remember all the people who have lived and died on the streets of
Toronto as a direct result of homelessness (there are now over 700
<http://rabble.ca/blogs/bloggers/johnbon/2013/11/political-leaders-pay-little-attention-to-homeless-deaths>
names on the list).

On November 22nd, 1998, the Big City Mayor’s Caucus of the Federation of
Canadian Municipalities <http://www.fcm.ca/home.htm> (FCM) passed a similar
motion. They followed with their own brief

just a few months later. National Housing Day honours that endorsement and
serves as a reminder that Canada is still the only G-8 country without a
national housing strategy. Learn more from the Canada Mortgage and Housing

*See you in November! *
